FM Radio and SVDO on Verizon Galaxy Note 2?

I have no idea why they do it, they just do. They just do. I have yet to see one re enabled by a dev. I think most of the time it is hardware disabled.

You have two options at this point. Tune in radio, and they do broadcast most games, or nothing.

It isn't just Verizon that does it either. Most of the variants of the gs1 had it disabled as well.

This is really all there is to it.

FM is used everyday by millions. For instance driving a car to work your not going to connect to an app that plays tunes, you would just turn on your radio and listen.

What happens when your phone has no signal? No internet radio! But if you have FM access you would still be jamming!

I bought the SGN2 and was pissed after i found out it didn't have FM. So i have to use stupid apps to listen to FM. Like iheart radio which sucks in my opinion. Reason; i ride the light rail everyday to and from work and the path it takes is very populated from start to finish. With no obstructions to the sky except the 2 second pass under a bridge. You would think cool no signal problems but every time at least 2 times during the ride my internet radio cuts out for a min or 2. No big deal right? Depends. If your interested in the weather, traffic report or just into the morning talk show and it cuts off right at the moment they are giving you the info you need or getting to a punch line it is a big deal. But for the inexperienced yea i guess you would say not having FM isn't a big deal.

The last device I had with a built in FM Receiver was the original Droid X. Thus far all of the Android devices that I've read about that used the FM Receiver were fairly poor as far as reception/signal quality went. Hell they used the headphones(and by extension your head) as the antenna. There are a lot of cell radios (the hardware) that have FM receivers built in however they don't bother as it's been proven for the most part to work but so well. So while I agree that we should have access to it, why would any company highlight one of the spotiest and unreliable services as a "feature"?

Still using my DroiX and the FM radio sucks. FM reception has been lousy since I got the phone.

Tbolt fm works for what I need, gym sends tv out on fm so if a game is on I can listen.

The International version of the GN2 has an FM Radio app on the phone weather this is just an app that pulls the radio from the internet or a front end to an actual FM radio antenna I am not sure. Also the US versions do not have this app again it may just not be included not sure if the US hardware would have the same FM radio antenna that the International one would and just not give an app for it or not.

My Sprint version has no FM radio. If the Fm radio is that important get the international GN2 version then just buy the little part of the adapter that plugs into the US outlet from Samsung or use a computer to charge the phone through the USB cable. Of course this option will not work if your on Verizon or Sprint as they use CDMA which is almost extinct in Europe and most other countries.

Verizon version does NOT have fm radio.

Does it physically not have the radio, or is it simply disabled? And if it's disabled, is it disabled in software or hardware? In other words, if a Verizon owner rooted their phone and installed another ROM, could they get access to the radio?

Millions of people listen to Fm radio everyday so I believe it is very relevent.
Persnally, all of my local pro and college sports broadcasts are on FM radio. I'm sure there is some way to listen over the web but it is much easier and less expensive with free over the air radio.

Although I personally haven't used it since 08 as I've had XM Radio in my cars since then. Expensive yes but quality is superior and no random static.

Hello from Ecuador, South America. I use the SGN2 international version FM Radio app a lot. Data plans are pretty expensive, so I use this app whenever there is no wifi ap, while ridding my bike, if I want to listen to news, random music to vary the one stored on my phone etc. Very useful. I wish though that a media app with FM, Internet, Podcast, Audio and Video app would be available...An alternative to the stock app is Spirit FM Radio ....very few choices in this area...who would imagine...radio frequencies are a great way to communicate...Regards

When I bought my Note 2, from Verizon, it replaced my old worn out Thunderbolt.
I loved the Thunderbolt radio, I used it a lot for time at the gym and for working in the yard. No need for the data plan, and reception was good.
Now, I have a limited plan and the idea of using my precious data on something like FM radio sounds like such a bad idea.

I found a Bluetooth headset that has an FM receiver built into the headset, which lets my phone ring through, should I have a call. Mine is a Sony-Ericsson MW600. It's just a little thing. You can use it with the stock (rubbery) headphones that come with it, or you can use your own.
When you get a call, the headset beeps at you, you push a little button on the base, which clips onto your shirt or collar, and take your call. Then when your call is over, it goes right back to the radio. It's working well for me after about a month now.

I think FM should be included in all cell phones, if anything, just to have for informational purposes, and it's not like it takes a lot of room up on a chip. Just my opinion.

I wished that my note 2 had fm radio. My old htc did out of the box without any modification. Of course, note 2 has a 5.5" screen which is way bigger than the 4.7" on my old htc. The htc did have a 16mp camera though.

The owner's manual for the HTC One (M8) mentions an app titled "FM Radio." The Verizon version of this phone has it removed, but the hardware and drivers are intact. You can find the APK file online that is the installer file for the original HTC factory FM Radio app. It works. I know because I have the Verizon HTC One (M8), bought at a Verizon corporate store. I installed the app and it works. As with any phone that has the FM receiver, you must plug in a headphone or auxiliary cord to act as the antenna. The HTC One (M8) allows you to listen using the phone's speaker even if you have headphones plugged in. The headphones must plug into the headphone jack; a wireless Bluetooth headset will not suffice.

FM receiver capability is helpful on several points:
1) Streaming the stations consumes data allowance if you're not connected to wifi, don't have unlimited data, and don't have special data treatment for streaming audio (some companies do).
2) The online stream generally lags behind the FM signal, which can be a serious problem if you want to win a call-in contest.
3) There are places you can't get a data signal but you can get an FM signal.
