Because using tune in radio drains the batteries much faster than fm radio. Or perhaps a weak data signal. And, some are on tiered data.

Not only that, TuneIn sometimes uses the streaming feed offered by some stations instead of actual live FM radio -- how am i supposed call in and win those 'caller # X' contests!!??

Would really love to know if you can get FM radio on this, or any other smartphone from Verizon (except for the DroidX). Need it for the gym to tune into the TV's.

Subscribing to the thread. I have been looking for the FM Tuner on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3, also.

I am pretty sure that the S3 does not have a FM radio in it. I know the Galaxy Nexus does not have one so you can not get FM transmissions on either.

About Tune In radio and other streaming radio apps...they dont get all the local stations sometimes. Tune In website from my phone used to for me, so the website was better than the app since day one. Now the website AND app get less of my local station than it used to. Might gotta try Full Desktop mode....

Sad they are doing away with FM radios on phones in the US.

The main reason to want the FM tuner for me is that you can listen to ballgames without paying MLB, NFL, the NHL, etc. In Boston you get local games over FM when you're out and about. Can't use any streamed application because you also have to purchase a streaming package, and they black out your in-market games. Spirit FM claims to be able to use some cellphone chipsets to play an FM signal, and I've had some luck installing this program on this phone or that in verizon stores, but basically I'm keeping my old droid x because it's has the fm tuner and it works well. Also, when I'm on a bike (every day) the fm tuner is more reliable. Tune In Radio keeps dropping out, maybe because there are so many cell towers around in Boston that it keeps looking for the closest one and then has to think for a minute. I bought the Droid X over the HTC Incredible specifically because it included FM radio and until another phone for the US market comes along that includes one (maybe never?), I'll just keep it.

HTC Thunderbolt has FM hardware & app (for whoever was looking for a Verizon phone with this capability). As noted, the US versions do not have the FM tuner. It is too bad that the OEMs are doing away with that feature - perhaps because it caters to such a small part of the overall market; perhaps because they're in bed with the carriers in the 'Let's force them to use data that they have to pay $$$ for' war. Your guess is as good as mine.
