I am doing the exact same thing as you are, I picked mine up on Friday. I have a 3g and my wife has my old 1g. We are both ready for an upgrade. I did a lot of research as well on this phone. Also, since I received my WiFi iPad and jailbroke my 3g for hotspot tethering, that has become a need.
Observations so far;
1. There is a TON of potential here with Android, it has a long way to go to get to apples plain ease of use and fluidity, but the base is there and it can only get better.
2. Build quality...... while this isn't to bad, I just don't think it is near the feel of the iPhone. The iPhone feels SOLID, this not so much, that's not to say its bad, just not as good as pple.
3. Someone REALLY needs to work on some kind of media hub for this thing. Me being a geek can handle the lack of one, my wife would be lost.
4. Battery life, read all the tips, getting better, the way Android handles apps needs a lot of work, waiting on Froyo. Will chime in more on this after the battery is broken in. The screen is beautiful, worth the battery life? I think so.
That's all for now, the keyboard is starting to bother me (good, but takes some getting use to)
I got the phone to test out while waiting on the next iPhone, I am hoping the next iPhone isn't blow me out of the water great, cause I really am tired of AT&T
