For iPhone Users: A Convert's First Impressions of the EVO

1.) Lot's of choices in music players. My favorite is MixZing.

2.) iSyncr will give you everything that you need to sync with iTunes.

3.) It's already built in. For alternatives check out Fusion Mail & You Mail.

Excellent write-up BTW.

I notice your profile says Seattle. I'm heading there in a month to work for MSFT, hows the Sprint service in the Redmond area?

*I HAVE OWNED EVERY iPHONE EVER MADE THE DAY EACH CAME OUT*

Well, I was planning to make this exact same post after a week (because I figued 3 days was too soon...) but this is pretty much exactly where I am.

Although, I like the dolphin HD better than safari. I LOVE how if you double click text to read it doesn't just zoom to that size, but instead resizes the column in such a way that it is convenient to read AND it PLAYS FLASH!!!! At least all the sites I tried (except the great HULU of course... damn it!).

Battery life is an issue. I think it is quite a serious issue, though not a deal breaker. I plan on buying a bigger battery (another beauty of NOT being under Apple's thumb) and I think that if this sized battery is barely making it, one much bigger should be good and then some.

I don't understand the scrolling. For some reason it's just not quite right, I can't put my finger on it... The truly impressive part with the iPhone is the fact that they got these little things completely sorted out 3 years ago...

I love widgets. Widgets are awesome. I can't wait until there are more. This phone has kept me all over twitter in ways I never wanted =) Also, the notification center is all kinds of awesome.

Anyway, I don't want to go on too much as I'm still considering making this post in a week or so with a little bit more assessment of the device but as of right this moment...

My happiness with my iPhone 3GS (as it is the most recent I've owned) about 8/10
My happiness with EVO about 9/10

Hi guys

I was going to get the EVO on Friday morning and read about a rumor that iPhone might come to Sprint so I decided to hold of till tomorrow and see if it is true, in the mean time i got one for my son and he was coming from BlackBerry and he totally loves it. About the battery try to set that the phone shuts of the screen in like 15 seconds or 30 seconds, that helps, turn of the 4G in NYC not here yet :-(

Try these extra battery:
Seidio - Your Single Source for Premium Smartphone Accessories

This is what i would get if i get the EVO, and now my wife wants one to, we both have androids now, I have the Hero and she has the Moment, I also had the Pre and it is a good phone but nothing like the EVO, the only thing that is good in the Pre is the swipping. If the iPhone does not come to Sprint like some rumors say then I am going to be getting 2 EVO's my wife and I, and I will also get the extended battery. I live in NYC and never had problems with Sprint and I also drove cross country and north and south and never had any problems. I like Sprint very much and I am happy with them. It is about time that Sprint starts to release good phones. I hope they continue this trend, if the iPHone comes that just gives Sprint users more choices. The more the better. And 4G I think will be here by end of summer.

I finally used an EVO today and I completely understand your comment about scrolling on it. It looks like a game that has a really awful framerate. Given the processor power in this thing, it makes me think this is just by design and not the result of an over-burdened CPU.

I heard from a semi reliable source froyo will fix this. If they do I will be very happy:)

If you're talking about the browser, it seems to predict where it thinks you want to stop which leads to some awkward behavior. If you look carefully, it always stops with a line of text at the top. That is, it won't cut off a line of text across the middle.

If you mean the launcher, it always highlights the icon before you can scroll which I agree is awkward.

I really don't think it's lagging anywhere though.

Thanks for the MixZing suggestion. Do people have an opinion one way or another about iSyncr vs DoubleTwist?

I understand the comments on the scrolling, but in apps like Twitter, and in the Browser. I hate to say it's not as smooth and fluid as it is on the iPhone, but something feels different. Also, like I mentioned, the bounce scrolling was a nice touch that I never really knew was there until I don't have it anymore.

I'm also a fellow iPhone convert.. had the 3G, and the 3GS. Grew tired of the restrictions Apple products live in.

Needed customization and something like a game changer, which is exactly what the Evo is.

Best of all Sprint coverages beats the hell out of AT&T for me. No more dropped calls.

DoubleTwist is a lot more work. Music goes from iTunes to DoubleTwist and then from DoubleTwist to your phone. With iSyncr it just syncs it directly. Don't get me wrong, I liked DoubleTwist until I discovered iSyncr. Also, I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but you have 24 hours to figure out if you like an app or not. If you don't then you can get a refund. So give iSyncr a shot and if you don't like it, then return it. This is another advantage of Android over Apple. I have both Android & Apple products, and that's definitely a feature I appreciate about Android.

Thanks for the writeup mike, its good to see that people are noticing that apple isn't the only one making a good device. Good unbiased review.

keep going with the suggestions and im sure in no time your EVO will do 95% of the things your iphone did.

Nice post Mike NYC. I'm Mike too but from the BX lol
Anyways, i'm in the same boat. I still have my iPhone3G, contract is up in early Aug. I figured why not give the EvO a try for 30 days. The battery does worry me a bit but i'm going to try some of the recommendations from this thread. So far, i luv the phone but i'm not sure if it's a "new toy" luv or what just yet. My main 2 tests for the 30days is signal and adapt to android. So far i've only been in the BX and lower Westchester(Yonkers) and the signal is just as good as AT&T. The calls are just as clear and no dropped calls. Over the past 3 weeks i've dropped 5 calls with my iPhone.

Anyways, i'm going to see what Apple brings tomorrow. If they don't get me as excited as i was to get this phone, i'm sticking with Sprint and saving $15 each month.

Similar boat

I'm coming from a similar boat. Had been with Tmo here for years in Northen NJ. Service was good but town next to me had a big dead zone. Had JB iPhone and was frustrated with no coverage there. So I jumped to the Pre on Sprint. Have to say Service was much better. The Phone was another thing. Still a beta product at best. I will miss WebOS but the Evo is calling me. Had a chance to use it in the Sprint store and was surprised how well it worked. Everything the OP said I found.

If it wasn't for the fact that the iPhone may be on Sprint soon. I would have snapped up the EVO right there. That and that stupid 10.00 EVO tax is just irritating.

By this time tomorrow I may be doing all this on my Shiny new EVO. Oh the wait.:D

I turned my Evo this morning at 8:50AM.... played with it ALL day long (GPS, WiFi, 3G internet, text message, calls, etc), and it gave me the battery warning around 5PM. That is no finicky battery life AT ALL. Let's see how it performs tomorrow, when I will be putting it to a 10 hour work day. :D

When I had the Pre that was just nasty abttery life, the best battery is BlackBerry hands down. But battery got better on Android. Some of my friends that have the iPhone always complain about battery life. Maybe HTC should have included a 1750 / 1800 mAh type battery. With Froyo coming battery should get better. But with these smart phone they always have problems cause they do so much in the background that the battery is always being used.
