Hey folks,

Looking for your thoughts on what would suit us best.

We are currently TMO customers looking to move. I had been thinking about going to AT&T (because it would be less exp. than VZW) and getting the Pre, but the more and more I read about Android, the more and more I want it.

I feel pretty comfortable that I want an Incredible. The question is what to get my wife.

She isn't a big techy, and this would be her first smartphone. Because of this, I don't think she will need the lastest, bleeding edge stuff. I don't think she has to have the fastest processor, or a bunch of memory. She won't have to have the biggest screen. So, does she need the Inc. from a hardware standpoint? I don't think so.

However, even though she is not techy, I could see her using some of the extra features that set Android apart from the competition. Some of these extra google apps that are so cool.

I thought about getting her the Moto Droid (which would save money if I buy through Amazon), but since I am getting HTC for me, I think it would be easier to help her with her device if she also had HTC. So, that really only leaves the Incredible or the Eris.

The advantage to the Eris is the value while keeping current functionality. The disadvantage is the age of the Eris and the earlier obsolescence and potential for being excluded from future cool functionality.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Have you looked into family plans for Verizon? They are MUCH cheaper than getting 2 separate plans. Less bills also.

The problem with getting her an Eris would be that it most likely will NOT get any Android OS updates (ie, 2.2 and on) after the 2.1 rollout is finished. Plus you would have Sense on there so if you were to update it with a ROM yourself, she would have to learn the stock Android UI. Which would mean she would want you to teach her. Which you may not want to do.

Giving her a Moto Droid might be a better option. It will get more updates (it is set to get 2.2 in a few weeks) and is more powerful so it will age better. Plus, its just way more badass than the Eris =P

As for getting her an Incredible, honestly it would seem to me to be wasted money, especially if she doesn't care about having a better camera or faster processor.

Take her to a Verizon store and see what she likes. Who knows, maybe she will fall in love with the Pre Plus or something. Her being happy with the phone is your main concern right? =]

But that's my 2 cents.

Eris & Incredible great combo

Got my wife an HTC Droid Eris for christmas. She loves it. Her first smartphone. She is not in to heavy tech stuff, but just calls, games, texting, pictures, & facebook and a moderate user at that. She really doesn't care about if the phone is rooted or can be, or about updates to the OS. What it does now is far and beyond good enough for her use. The phone is really an Incredible Jr. and looks sharp and flashy. She is proud of it. Me, I'm presently in a Storm 1 and stuck in my contract until November. Not sure I'd jump now if I could. I love the Incredible and htc phones out now and 99% sure I'd go that way. I do like certain things about BB phones. Rim better come out with something great on touchscreen phones soon or will lose many customers like me. Waiting to see what the rumored Storm 3 is to look like with the new OS. You can't go wrong though with Eris & Incredible in my opinion. Go for it.:D Phil in Florence,SC

Don't forget that the Motorola has a buy one, get one free phone, of equal value special, and you can use the freebie to get the Incredible!!!! I just did this: paid $200 for the Motorola Droid, and the Incredible was free (if it will ever get here! - backordered)

Is there anything out there right now that the Inc. can do that the Eris can't? It would be great if I could find a chart that shows a comparison. Or maybe it would be best to compare Android 2.1 vs. 2.2 (which is what the updates will be for each phone)?

It looks like this is just a buy one Moto, get one free. I don't see that getting a free Inc. is an option.

I think I would like to stick with two HTC products, because of HTC Sense. Android will be new to me, too, so if I have to learn HTC Sense plus Moto's UI, that might be too much for me.

I say give her the Incredible. My wife is by no means a techy and a phone with basic functionality was fine with her until she was introduced to the Incredible. I was amazed at how fast she was able to learn the Sense UI and incorporate the phone into her life. I've definitely created a monster by getting her that phone!!

But would your wife be just as happy with an Eris? The question isn't whether or not to get her a smartphone, it is whether to get an Incredible or Eris.

get her the incredible too. then you can help her when she has a problem and look like a hero. if she's on Android 1.5, you won't always be able to do that. Plus, you couldn't always use the same apps if you don't have the same OS.
