i know right?
turns out the inlaws need me to install their new hd tv and accessories and im considering bartering(sp?) their pc for a few days in exchange for my labor.
im 92% sure i know what i need to do now, just hope the phone is willing to work with me this time.

Take a look at the you tube video in the following thread at xda.
Samsung Captivate ROM Flashing *VIDEO* How-To - xda-developers
The author takes you through steps needed to make a backup, use Odin to restore the JF6 ROM (and then install another ROM... which you may or may not be interested in).
Let us know when you can try again

im not to keen on computers at all, i build skyscrapers for a living and this is what happens when you have spare time! lmao

Those are great vids. I have oclf has my root and use titanium backup. Can I keep my phone rooted and use Odin to do a ROM change or do I have to unroot and use Odin?
You don't need to unroot to use ODIN.
Some ROMs (most custom roms like cognition & perception by design gears, over at xda) come with root already installed.
The JF6 ROM in the one-click installer doesn't include root. You'll need to re root that if you decide to stick with it, and need to be rooted. Note that you don't need to root if you're just going to install a second ROM over the top (most recommend flashing to JF6 as a first step to establish a "clean" foundation).

I have got everything to work, im now back to 2.1 with the update, my newest problem is I think I have a problem with the actual phone usb/charging port.
reason is, the last few days after charging the phone, i would unplug it and it would continue to say my phone is charging.
after I just did this reflash to get rid of froyo, i did not have my sim card in, so i waitied till Odin told me I "passed" and it rebooted and all, I had to turn the phone off to put my sim card in and now I can not get it to come back on.
I tried the 3button way and it brings up the droid with the shovel icon???
I want to take the phone to att and ask for another, what should I do?

Flash it again to stock. Sounds like something didn't take. Also note that MASTER CLEAR is performed on a phone that is on and running (with USB dev on) and NOT done from download/recovery mode.
If you did not do a proper master clear, I suspect that is the cause of your problem.
Flash to stock again.
First boot, turn USB Development ON and USB mode to MASS STORAGE.
Start ODIN one click, connect phone to USB, click MASTER CLEAR.
You don't want to take the phone back in its current state, as it will be obvious (not to the counter guy) that you were messing with it.
Why do you want to replace the phone? Something physical wrong, or ?

I had a usb problem so I had it exchanged for a new one.

I forgt to mention thanks to all the help here I was able to get it back to 2.1, but by that time my usb port was pretty screwed up and kept causing the phon to randomly shut off.
