Very loyal Palm and Pre user here for as long as i could be and still use my TouchPad all the time. (do have it dual-booting with CM-9 though). WebOS, (after the update) was wonderful, did a lot of things far better than either Android or I-Fruit and (if you got one that didn't fall apart) the Pre keybord and form factor was great. And NOTHING has approached the touchstone yet.
But even with the rose-colored screen protectors on, its important to keep some things in mind:
*WebOS lost a lot of the basic PIM functionality that Palm had made famous. Very basic and, for many, needed calendar, contact and tasking functions were just not adequate.
*WebOS took a while to even work well -- the first version was rushed and incomplete. A long-awaited update was great, but there were still things that needed to be done when the plug got pulled.
*Without going into all the why's, the apps and developers were just not there in enough numbers. There were some great apps to be sure, but not enough of them. Indeed, not even some of the key ones ones promised at the unveiling. And then, of course, some of the ones that were there at first started to go away or not be supported.
*The hardware was hit and miss at best, I went through 3 Pre's in a year before I got one that worked and didn't fall apart, and that one was starting to go when I gave up and got an EVO. Things did get better it seems near the end but by then...
*Thing took forever to boot up. And you had to reset often. Think would lock-up at the worst times.
*Battery life was bad. Just was. Had to buy an extended battery just to function.
In all, a "smartphone experience" is not just the OS or the multitasking or whatever, it is a combination of the OS, the apps, the hardware, the support, the carrier and more. With all of that, Android was a better choice for me and a lot of others with the OG Evo and am not sorry I switched then and like my EVO LTE as well even with the several issues (like multitasking) that are not up to par with other devices or the old Pre's
It is so sad because, by now, with continued REAL development, WebOS could have been even better and have had an open road for adoption since Palm/HP is very well protected in the patent-fight department.
