Forum poster on XDA allegedly spills the beans on why we wount get 2.2...

Copy and paste from my response on XDA:

1. Verizon knows what they are doing, before they signed the contract.
2. If Samsung changes the rules mid contract, Verizon is likely to sue them, and Samsung knows this.
3. Were it true, then there would not be new builds being leaked all the time for the other big carriers, and there would not be new Verizon builds (that have not leaked). Yes, all these builds are marked with compile dates. Samsung is not going to tie up their resources on something that is not going to happen due to carriers refusing. They would simply halt all work until a settlement was made.
4. Neither Samsung, nor Verizon would sell docks requiring 2.2 to work properly, if they had not already had a plan to release it in the future.
5. I take the word of an actual Samsung employee who said it was bull****, over an internet rumor.
(new!)
6. Samsung would have taken legal action by now, subpoena'ed XDA, and forced them to hand over the whistle blower's IP address, and made them pull it off the forums. None of which has happened.

Thank you for adding some reality to the conversation -- much appreciated.

Where did you get that screenshot? Is that from a leaked build?

I wish. No that's a screenshot from a Samsung employee. I believe there is a newer build out but also has not been leaked.

I'm always thankful for common sense when reporting "leaked" news. Good thought, the lack of 2.2 has cost Samsung sales, more so than VZW. Me being one of them. That is the main reason that I stuck it out with the DX and wouldn't get a Fascinate for my wife.

Samsung's official response, as posted on Gizmodo:

"Samsung does not charge carriers for updates to new versions of Android.
We are working to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available to all U.S. Galaxy S owners as soon as possible. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of each Galaxy S device, we are performing additional testing. Samsung feels it is important to make the Android 2.2/Froyo upgrade available only after we feel that we can give the millions of U.S. Galaxy S owners a simple and reliable upgrade experience."

Could it really be that uniqueness of each phone is slowing down the updates? I'm inclined to think that if they had just one version to update that they could get it out quicker.

The uniqueness is a complete line of ****. What, one has cdma and the other is gsm with a sim card and onboard flash? Come on.

You gave a good reason why samsung shouldn't charge and why they have every reason to drop the update asap... But the only thing we know is happening is there has been no release. Believe what you will, but some parts of this puzzle fit. If samsung were feeding verizon froyo builds that they are rejecting, we would see those leaked and not this dl09 crap. Look at what we have.

oh look. another pointless post about how we are never getting froyo that changes into we will get it next month that changes to we are gonna skip 2.2 and go to 2.3 that changes to how the iPhone 36 now has android 2.8 that changes to my grammas razor has 2.2 wheres mine to ........... c'mon. give it a rest already.

Considering how @#$%&# up Verizon got parts of the dl09 update, I am glad they are taking their time to get froyo right. I can wait if it means not crashing my device.

It's pretty sad that it takes a couple of "out there" conspiracy theories and crackpot rumors to get some kind of official response out of a manufacturer. Perhaps that's why they make this stuff up...to get something out of them.

there are too many rumors going around right now and no one knows what is really true but it is intresting that samsung defend them selves about the "paying" for the upgrade thing

haha, this is getting ridiculous. i feel like it's all a marketing strategy to get consumers drooling over phones with newer Android OS's that's backfiring so now they're just issuing these statements and answering tech news sites as damage control.

not to be one of those people to add fuel to another internet rumor, but i wonder if it would be feasible if enough samsung galaxy s owners communicated together to bring this issue to the FTC as a case that Samsung is colluding with US cellular service providers to increase revenues by artificially increasing demand for their newer phones being released soon. i can't count how many times my economics professors talk about how aggressively anti-trust the FTC is on collusive and monopolistic behavior. not that it necessarily would work but it would cause problems for the corporations to have another government regulatory agency looking over their shoulder while they have consumers all clamoring and complaining to them.
:p

*i need to put a disclaimer that i've only gotten like 5 hours of sleep a night on average the last couple weeks and that i've definitely gone crazy sitting in front of a computer looking at a excel spreadsheets for a project

I wish they would just tell us if they are working on it and give us a ETA. I mean, it would shut everyone up.

Not really. The only that those people that has been complaining wanted to hear from Samsung is that froyo is ready. Anything else's they will just complain about it.
