FPS - System vs. apps

I have noticed that the FPS seems to be much more responsive / quicker to verify when using it to open an (any) app such as banking, stock brokerage, or even Google Pay compared to when simply unlocking the Pixel 6 Pro.

Is this my imagination? Has anyone else noticed the same?

You are correct. I noted that in another post. It's the same hardware so it must be a tightening of print acceptability on phone unlock that makes the initial fingerprint a bit slower and more "finicky". I have no problem with that and actually welcome that it may be a bit harder to get in, since it means it cannot be faked by other digits or other means. Once in, then yes make access to my apps a bit easier, similar to the house locks are more secure than bedrooms or washroom ones. People should realize this and stop complaining so much.

Yep. Same but since I moved to 12L beta 3 it has been flawless

Feels the same to me whether it's to unlock the phone or in an app like two of my banking apps.

Fingerprint scanner is a system level feature. It'd take the same time regardless of whether your unlocking the phone or logging into an app. Your banking app isn't doing anything other than waiting for Android to verify the fingerprint.

With either case it's still slow and inconsistent for me. That's why I've ditched it entirely and move back to a PIN.

I use Wells Fargo and there is no difference in how my FPS works. It's reliable and works like it should for unlocking my Pixel 6 Pro and opening my banking app.

I use two banking apps, both which have fingerprint login. Recognising the fingerprint is the same as it is unlocking the phone. Which is to say pretty slow and might not work the first time. Latest updates haven't seem to fix it.

Yeah.

I suspect those who think the Pixel 6 fingerprint scanner is fast never used an alternative in-screen scanner. Or even comparing it to the previous capacitive, rear-mounted fingerprint scanners previous Pixel phones (bar the Pixel 4/4XL) had was much, much faster and more reliable than the current one.

Even if I had a 100% accuracy rate on the Pixel 6 fingerprint scanner, it's the slow/inconsistent speed of unlock that also bugs me. It can take a few milliseconds to what feels like two seconds to unlock sometimes. Like it just lags out and sits there trying to figure out whether to let you unlock it or not. So I can't reliably just tap my finger on it for a set time and have it unlock. Other phones I just built muscle memory where I'd tap, let go and it'd be unlocked. But with this, you never know whether it's going to be slow or slower.

Worst part is, we know Google could fix this. The speed isn't a hardware issue - other phones have the same fingerprint scanning tech and they unlock instantly.

Yeah I prefer face unlock too.

I haven't had issues with fingerprint scanners in the past. Never had issues with previous Pixels, iPhones or Samsung phones I've owned. Just this Pixel 6 is the one I've constantly had issues with. Updates haven't seemed to improve it for me.

Honestly I have no idea. I assumed that when reports/reviews came out and people in forums/message boards were complaining about the fingerprint scanner, that Google would have taken notice and rolled out a a fix by now, but it's been 4 months so I assume Google don't believe it's an issue, or a big enough issue to warrant tweaking it. Google probably have metrics reported to them on the number of failed-reads from users and what % of reads fail. Maybe it's too low for them to care.

But I mean let's be serious here, it's by far the slowest, least-accurate in-screen fingerprint scanner in a phone in 2021. And this is supposed to be Google's flagship phone, not their 'a' series, which I'd almost give it a pass for.

My only other inscreen fps experience is with the Galaxy S10+ and that has been hit and miss. I have learned patience with it over the years and used the same with my 6 Pro. But really 12L beta has improved my fps no end and it is quite fast as I showed in a gif on another thread about the fps.

I have had other phones with in screen FPS, and never had any issues. They might be a tiny millisecond slower than a capacitive button, but nothing that has ever caused me issues with previous phones or my P6. As far as the question being asked in this thread: I haven't really noticed if using the FPS in apps is any faster / better than for unlocking.

I said it once and I'll say it again. I have no issues at all with the FPS on this phone.. it opens up quick for me.. and I agree, I have a few apps that it opens even faster when trying to get into it..

My experience and this is someone who has multiple phones and day to day hands on with other fingerprint scanners its fast and reliable.
I will tell it straight if I'm disappointed in a company especially using multiple manufacturers for long time . Fingerprint scanner will be a hit or miss for majority of the people out there its just the way it is . I see that not just phones but other Fingerprint readers
