Free wifi tethering froyo 2.2

Hi I have been looking around and trying to get free wifi tethering for my evo. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places but can someone please direct to a link or something. I already updated my phone to froyo.....

You can only have Free WiFi tethering if you have rooted your phone, also I heard that if you updated to Froyo 2.2 you can't root your phone as of yet with the 2.2 1.6 Froyo version.

Oh ok so basically you have to root your phone first in order to get free tethering... ok. I am getting confused with the 2.2 updates rooted...

Yea if you root your phone and put a custom Rom on your phone then you can use free WiFi. Now I only heard that if you updated you can root your phone yet, but not really sure.
