...and I only have 7GB of space left.? Just the basic apps (Google Drive, Evernote, Twitter, Instgram, Dropbox, etc.) and I haven't even downloaded any games yet, and I've got 12 I want to install, which will probably take me down to 4GB's. Wow, Samsung, just wow.

I'm glad I have a 32GB SD card to put all my music, photos, podcasts, movies, and camera files on. Jeez.

You should be able able to move at least part of many apps off to the SD card. That should give you some space back. Settings-->More-->Application Mangler-->Downloaded. You should be able to move at least part of this list to your SD card by selecting the app and "Move to SD card"

I got myself the 32gb version and simultaneously bought a 32gb sd card to mostly music, so that all my apps and camera pics can be stored on phone memory. Maybe you shud have considered the storage issue prior to purchase, the Android OS chowes alot of space.

In the OP's defense, with the S4, the OS tends to chew up more space than with other phones. That's one of the big reason they came forth with the update to allow you to move apps to the SD card.

from my Sony XTZ

That's True, maybe Samsung should consider making should consider making 32gb a standard for flagships.

It's not something I should have had to worry about frankly. Only having 7GB's after installing basic apps is absurd.

Well, 7GB plus the 32GB card you said you put in there. For $50 you can get a 64GB card to bring you up to a total storage up to ~73GB (64(card) + 16(internal) - 11(os)). So that's $250 total, assuming you spent about $200 on the phone. With the iPhone you have to spend $400 to get 64GB minus the OS.

Really all you're complaining about is the ~3GB extra the Samsung OS seems to take up. It's a bummer, but that's only an issue with the S4 if you play graphic intense games that take up a lot of space, in which case it would probably be an issue with any 16GB internal memory phone. I'd imagine that anyone who played those games would go for a phone with 32GB internal memory (which you can get with the S4) no matter what phone they got.
