Froyo DK28 is out for EPIC

Here is a conspiracy theory. They leaked this on purpose to get free beta testers, they are prob reading this thread right now......

Anyways, im encouraged, its progress I didn’t have too many issues, just wanted to roll back and get it officially.

I'm not seeing anyone mention one big problem I saw the short time I was on the leaked DK28 -- in the browser, it didn't seem that columns re-aligned after a pinch/zoom. If I pinched out to make the text bigger, the text got bigger, but I would then have to scroll left/right to see the entire text, unlike with DI18 where the text would re-align for the new visible column. Am I the only one who saw that? Was everyone else so enthralled with Flash that they missed this big problem? Am I the only one who reads text anymore LOL??

Oh...and how the heck is everyone getting back to DI18 *without* hosing their accelerometer? Maybe you all didn't try to calibrate (using a new option in the Froyo settings) while you were on DK28 - which saved you from this problem???

I'm going back to DI18. Serious lag when playing AB: Seasons and ads are pop up. Navigation is slow. The removal of Samsung Widgets. AND GPS! I know there is a fix but I'd rather wait.

One issue I realized this morning is I cannot connect my phone to my computer via USB and get it into mass storage mode.

After a trying it again for science after about 4 failures at different times it worked without a hitch. Not sure if it will keep working but for now it does.

That said if this holds out then I think the update is actually working properly for me with no issues.

I wouldn't doubt it. They do it in the video game market with big titles. Look at Halo Reach for XBOX 360, they did a big beta test open to the public to get feedback on the game so it didn't flop at the official release and have to deal with a ton of title updates to fix issues. Now Epic games is doing the same thing with Gears of War 3, due out late 2011, they are putting out a beta in the next few months.

What better beta testing than the people who grind your product into the ground day after day, YOU AND ME...

I HATED this too and was about to roll back till I figured it out. Wait till the page loads. When you pinch and zoom, you have to double tap the screen to make the text re-align. An extra step I know which I do not like either.

From what I saw, that's how froyo works on the Samsung TABLET... not suprising to hear.

Battery seems good if Wifi off. When Wifi on, then it happily sucks itself dry in a couple hours!

I've noticed my battery doing better after a reboot yesterday. Still not perfect, but some of the other glitches seem to have gone away too. Maybe I hadn't rebooted after installling all my apps and updating everthing, but this has helped a lot. Even the screen is refreshing faster. I can't explain it!

I tried this and the phone was still unusable. Completely unusable. I really loved what Froyo brought to the party, but I rolled back to 2.1 using Odin and will gladly wait for an official OTA update.

We're all the same: tech junkies who can't wait for anything... but I've developed some patience in recent days thanks to my experience with the leaked 2.2.1 release.

As for an official Froyo update... it can't come soon enough.

Update on DK28

"The blogosphere is a-buzz that Sprint?s Samsung Epics would be revitalized with the upgrade to 2.2 FroYo. Late last Friday, we had to reject the software version DK28 for the Epic. The upgrade was made available to a handful of internal beta participants. Over the weekend, some users were able to access and download a test build (DK28) for the Samsung Epic from some 3rd party developer sites. Unfortunately, this is not approved software for Sprint production devices and we strongly recommend that users refrain from loading it.

Software version DI18 is the current production version of software. Sprint is working with Samsung on a new software build that is hoped to be completed quickly, and it?s a recognized priority to get it certified and sent out. When new versions of software are available, users will receive a notification from Google on their device stating that an upgrade is available for download and installation. Unfortunately because of this delay, we have no firm delivery date, but are working diligently to get this upgrade out quickly."

At least Sprint is finally communicating. If their test build was the same as the crap update that was posted here, I'll gladly wait for the real deal.

Completely unusable? I didn't think it was that bad, sure it still has the GPS issues and a few other small bugs but considering what the previous leaks were like this release is very close to a finish product I would say.

I too rolled back to 2.1 simply because I wanted the OTA when its released and not have to roll back at the last second. After tasting Froyo I can wait the bit longer for the real deal.

Well, I upgraded my Epic to Froyo last week. After the initial upgrade, I had all kinds of problems with many core components (like the alarm clock and music player, as well as GPS totally broken). I reverted back to Eclair...then wiped my phone to factory default. Upgraded again and NO PROBLEMS whatsoever!

I notice I get a MUCH faster GPS lock (with or without aGPS), MUCH better battery life, and of course FLASH! I dont know why DK28 was rejected, but I am assuming that a few bugs related to the install process need to be ironed out. For those that are not afraid to tinker (you may have to revert back to Eclair and then reload...and reverting back is NOT as easy as dropping a .zip file on your SD card!) I would recommend trying it!

For everyone else...patience! Good things come to those who wait!

This is starting to shape up to be a very nice Christmas gift to Samsung Epic 2.1 owners. That would be nice to have OTA 2.2.1 under the tree on Christmas morning. :D
