Froyo OTA: First Impressions

I've had the 2.2 official update for about a week now, and love it. Everything seems a little more crisp. I honestly haven't run into any problems whatsoever. I don't run a task killer either anymore, and my battery life seems to have improved a little also.

It's working fine for me, but I don't think they implemented for every app. At least Browser and Mail rotate fine to either side. But the Music app doesn't rotate at all. I'm guess that for the apps in the market it will be similar: developers need to update their apps to take advantage of this "feature". I would have expected all "stock" apps to rotate, not just some.

I actually have had a lot of issues with the slow lagging of the autorotate feature. especially on Launcher Pro.

hmm

I was pretty excited about getting Froyo, and at first, I loved it, but now I'm not so sure.

My battery life seems fine. I can't really say I've seen much change one way or the other.

The phone does seem generally a bit snappier, but nothing mindblowing.

720p is pretty nice, as well as small updates to some of the other apps.

I have started getting random force closes in many apps. Could be due to apps not being fully compatible with 2.2, but I don't think that's the issue, because others dont seem to be having the same issue with those apps on 2.2. I keep getting errors sending google voice texts. It says the message cant be sent, then I click send again, and it works. Happens all the time.

If you are using Maps navigation, and you have music playing, it will stop the music when it tries to speak a direction. When I say stops the music, I don't mean turns it down for a second then restarts, I mean it closes the music app. Apparently this is a global issue with 2.2 on all devices.

My GPS also went a little crazy the other day while I was on vacation in Niagara Falls. It kep thinking I was in Canada for some reason. Maps kept showing me like 2 blocks off from where I actually was (with GPS enabled, not AGPS), and it kept displaying everything in Km instead of Miles, which happens if it think you're in Canada.

If I don't see an update in the works soon to fix these issues, I'll be switching back to 2.1.

Since the update basically all of my apps force close the moment I open them.

What should I do? Reinstall every app?

What I am curious about is if I can manually apply the 2.2 update when I already did the OTA. I was in a bad signal area during the update, perhaps a bit of data was corrupted and is leading to my issues?

I hate it. My battery drains at 3% a min while emailing or texting. Tapping icons is now laggy too.

Does anyone know of EASY instructions to root from ota froyo to root froyo? I dont know anything about phone hacking or anything.

Two new things that have been irking me since the 2.2 upgrade, not sure if it's just my phone or everyone else.

1) I use Handscent for texting. When I get a text message there is like 3-5 second lag to when it actually appears on my phone. My phone backlight lights up and nothing happens for 3-5 seconds and then I receive the text message. It's really odd and never happened in 2.1. Not the end of the world but wondering if this is is a handscent issue or a SMS issue.

2) The Android Music player skips A LOT. It never used to skip, now I got a constant 1 second pause about twice a song.

Minor issues, but just venting asking if anyone else experienced this?

I did a search and didn't find an answer, so, here goes... After I updated to 2.2, among the many problems I had is that my calendar (which I have set to sync with Exchange) has all my meetings doubled up. Anyone had an issue like this? I cannot find a way to essentially empty the calendar and have it re-sync fresh from Exchange. Is there a way to do that?

Verizon Media Manager Auto Starts

Since the 2.2 upgrade a Verizon Media Manager Web page auto starts every time I Plug the phone into the USB cable. How do I make it stop? I do not want Verizon Media Manager.

Ever since the upgrade my keyboard reactions are very slow. If I try to write out messages in Handcent it lags at least 3-5 seconds before all the letters/words I type show up. Does anyone else have this issue or suggestions on how to fix or an alternative text messaging program that doesn't lag? I have done a hard wipe/reset twice now and no improvement.

I've been gone for a week so sorry if this has been covered ad nauseum....

My battery life still sucks with Froyo. Some people mentioned a factory reset would fix it.....I did this and still having the same issues. And it's not a rogue app causing it, my awake time is only a fraction of the up time, so the phone is sleeping ok. With 2.1 I could easily get 1.5 to 2 days on a 1750 battery, now I'm lucky to get 8 hours. Basically something built in to Froyo is causing this battery drain issue. And the battery takes forever to charge too.

Question....does anyone know a way to go back to 2.1? I called 2 Verizon stores near me and they both said no. But then again they usually don't know squat. I thought maybe someone on here might have an update.zip file or some way to get back to 2.1?

Thanks.

if you download ODIR to your exchange and run it it will get rid of almost all your duplicate entries. it worked for me.

Thanks, but... what is ODIR? And by "to your exchange", do you mean "to your phone"? Because this is an enterprise exchange server at work, I can't install anything there.

Let me clarify - these calendar entries are NOT doubled on my Outlook, they are only doubled on the phone.

OK, I went back for a second day of searching the interwebs for an answer that would work - I had previously tried clearing data in Calendar and re-syncing to no avail, tried a few other things.

I found one that worked! For reasons that defy logic, the list of Applications on the Android shows one called "Calendar", and another called "Calendar STORAGE". If you clear data on the STORAGE one, that does indeed work.

But thanks for the other suggestions!

I've grown increasingly concerned about Froyo since it OTAed to my Incredible and after a post-OTA data reset. As others have noted. my battery life is definitely worse than it was with 2.1. I have the HTC 2150 Amp battery and it is draining much more quickly than it had previously. It is also running considerably warmer than it did pre-Froyo. Like some I have seen the orientation issue where if you're holding the phone in its normal portrait position, some apps (Market, Internet Browser) will open in landscape mode and then after a second or two abruptly snap to portrait mode. I'm seeing what I think is some slowing of the browser's calling up web some web sites. The URL bar will show an address loading with a blank screen, then it will stall at about 80% and finally load the entire page. It seems to be caching everything before the page actually comes up. I can only hope that a maintenance update of some kind is in the works.

Hey everyone! I also got the Froyo update and I also think that Froyo sucks! Here are a few reasons:

My phone seems slower (especially scrolling in the browser)

My battery life sucks as well! At first I though it was my New York times app, but it's not.

Now lockpicker doesn't work! I have to type a pin everyone time I unlock my phone! (**Note: lockpicker worked with my first phone that OTA'ed to Froyo though.)

My speaker phone busted the other day so I called verizon and they sent me over a replacement Dinc (i'm not one of those whiny *****es that cries about getting a rebuilt phone, as long as it looks the same, I could care less if it's rebuilt). When I booted the replacement phone I noticed that it didn't come with Froyo because it lacked the "DROID" voice that Froyo does while booting and the phone itself was way fast! Sure enough, Froyo wasn't preloaded, but as soon as I actived the phone, it started downloading the Froyo update without even asking me if I wanted to. Figures.

"Anyhoo", Froyo seems to work alot better now; i've got battery life, and there doesn't seem to be much lag anymore. I still I think Android was faster running 2.1 though. So much for all the hype of Froyo and how JIT equals 5x faster or something like that. And one more thing: now lockpicker doesn't work, even though it did on my first phone that upgraded to Froyo.

In conclusion, I just don't think that OTA's work as good as a factory installed version of Froyo or an OTA that has been installed on a 'clean' phone. This reminds me of upgrading windows back in the day. You could just updated the OS you had and keep all your stuff, but no matter what, it just never worked as good as a complete hard drive reformat and a clean install.

PS Don't forget to scratch your balls in the morning.
