Note 3 is too big but maybe I would get used to it. Android 4.3 is a plus. Both have super fast processors. Wont use s pen at all. Which should I buy? Why?

I took a long time to decide between these two. I almost got the G2 using the Verizon30 code for 139.99. I liked the phone a lot and its fast and has a beautiful screen. I did however decide to get the Note3 because it has a bigger screen. I have big hand and big pockets so the bigger the phone is the happier I am. It could have been a little bigger and I would have been happy. The att galaxy mega at 6.3" is probably my limit though. I also chose the Note 3 because of the extra functions and the S-pen. I had the chance to play with both phones at an att store and I am glad I waited for the Note3. I just love the size. If you can go to a store and play with both and see which you like.

BTW you are asking in a Note3 section of the forum so your answers will favor the Note3.

What's important to you?

  • Screen size? Note 3 wins
  • Screen Quality, about a wash though with good use of the settings I think the Note 3 can win here. Also AMOLED uses less battery.
  • Battery, again about a wash.
  • Support Samsung has been doing a better job of this than LG in what I've seen. More updates from Samsung, More ROMs from the developers. This may not matter to you, but it was what drove me to the Note 3 over the LG Optimus G Pro, another 5.5 inch device with good specs.
  • Overlay this is purely preference. That said, LG is probably less intrusive than Samsungs Touchwiz.
  • The region lock is a strike against the Note 3 if you travel out of country from where you purchase it and want to use a local SIM.
  • Acessories, I think you have a wider choice of those with Samsung, but I admit I'm not up to date on G2 accessories.

I don't find the Spen that special personally either. I do use it as just a stylus when I'm snacking so I don't gunk up the screen. And I do owe it to my self to work with the S pen features and see if they add anything to my experience. I do use Evernote a fair amount and the ability to quickly jot a note via handwriting and sync it in recognized text to my Evernote would be handy. And I've had some fun with the bundled Sketch app from Autodesk.

Tell us more about what you like to do with your phone, what you'd like to improve about your current phone situation and those kind of things. The Note 3 was the right choice for me, but that doesn't make it the right choice for you.

If you think the Note 3 is to big and you don't need the use of the pen then get the G2. The G2 is a beast, fast, great screen, freaking great camera! Don't get the Note 3 if the main selling factors you don't want.

Ya i know... but guess what I'll get in the g2 forum? The sd card is a huge plus for the note 3 too. I'm curious if it lags like the gs4. The g2 is amazingly fast. I have played with both... even put a note 3 in my pocket but I like to hip case carry and it's too big for that. I don't like big items in my pockets. When i sit it is uncomfortable.

You mention roms but no way to unlock gs4 for roms so I doubt I can unlock bootloader of note 3.

The G2 is awesome because it packs a big screen in a small shell. The extremely small bezels are great and the camera is the best on an android phone. But if you want a bigger screen, sd slot, removable battery, and spen, you have to go for the Note 3.
Also it seems that Samsung will update their phones with newer versions of Android. LG doesn't have a good track record of doing this.

If you're on Verizon or ATT, that's a bigger problem. Probably will be overcome. Maybe even SafeStrap again. The T-mobile Note 3s have been rooted, ROMs will follow.

I'm VZW. They lock it down the tightest. I have no problem with safestrap if it is possible to run an aosp rom. It cannot on my current phone

Most of what you describe as features of note 3 are negatives to me except the sd card... and that is huge to me. Not a big cloud fan despite my unlimited data. Of course n3 more expensive too. I'm giving myself at least until the vzw version is at the store. I almost bought g2 on impulse today but I'm forcing myself to wait so i have time to carefully weigh plusses and minuses. One big g2 plus is you can root and install custom recovery.

Coming from a S4, I thought the Note 3 might be too big but I got used to it really fast surprisingly. The device getting a bit narrower and thinner did wonders for one-handed useability. I couldn't easily one-hand the Note 2 but I can the Note 3. :)

how is the camera on the note 3? I currenty have the G2, but am really leaning to the Note!

It's the carry-ability I worry about more than type-ability

The camera on the Note 3 is top notch. I don't have any issue with the camera at all.

Carrying the Note 3 has been fine for me of course you won't be able to wield it like you would a smaller device. But this phone is big but not that big. I saw the Samsung Galaxy Mega in the store. Now that's a big phone.

I'm GN2 owner big Samsung fan very disappointed with GN3 build quality .
Its to lite has plastic toy feel.
Home button flimsy wobbly on board will break fast.
Speaker is weak.

I will have my eye on Active version that should be released in November.

How is the RAM usage on these phones?

I checked out Note 3 today in store and I was shocked, 2.3gb total RAM and 1.83 was in use, cleared all non used apps etc, and it dropped to 1.45 which was the best I could. It really is one of the major issues with Samsung phones imo. After a year or two they become almost obsolete. My S2 is not even 2 years old, and I am not running major resource apps, it just gets so slow on certain things like keyboard for texting etc, phonebook disaster, with 788mb ram usally 650 is always in use. My friend's HTC one is running around 600 out of 1.5gb available, max is around 850-900.

Any thoughts from owners?

I see what you are talking about and I can see how you could perceive that as a problem. I have 1.5 GB in use and I have just under a GB available. I'm not going to monitor this or stress about what it means though. The phone seems to be running well so that's all that matters to me I guess I will see how it holds up in the long term. But as for now, I'm not going to go fishing for something to be discontented about.

I have both and I'm trying to decide. For the LG, I really like the size, bezel and the camera is much better than the Note 3 in my opinion. (Maybe because of the OIS?) The Note 3 is fast, looks decent, I like the s-pen and the screen is very nice also. Not a fan of the Note 3 back panel, but you can replace it easily. Still, I'm leaning towards the G2 because of the camera.

Oh yeah, and the default UI settings. The LG uses the high resolution to its advantage; the Note 3 looks like the Android Jitterbug of phones with everything so damn big on the phone UI. (Yes, I know I can use a different launcher.)

One of the things that I don't like about LG phones (and I am aware that I am nit picking) I'd that the screen has those rainbow colored dots when you view them under sunlight. I don't know what thisbis, but I didn't like it on my Nexus 4 and I saw the same thing on the the G2. The Nexus 4 had the visible digitizer too that I couldn't stand. Again, I know this is a small complaint that most people wouldn't care about. But it was something that bothered me.

You find the G2 camera that much better? I have G2 now and the camera seems hit or miss. Blows out a lot of whites. Also struggles with any action type shot even in day light. I was thinking the camera was close to a wash between the two devices. Was going to return G2 for Note 3 based on this theory.
