I refused to give up on this and I think I might have cracked it. In Kies 3, go to Tools, then Preferences, click on the Device tab and initialise the sync log. To do this, click on the Schedule line. This brings up the 'Initialise sync log' box. Click on that and the date of the last attempt to sync is replaced with 'No syncing log'. Now try and sync your Outlook calendar again. It has worked for me and I'm delighted. Good luck with it.
