My Nexus works fine on other wireless networks, work, friends houses, etc. but for some reason in my house I only get the greyed out icon showing that I have full wifi service but the internet doesnt work.

It has worked for me since I got the phone and now all of a sudden it doesnt work anymore. I had cablevision come for a service call the other day and now I dont have wifi (for my phone only). I am typing this from my laptop which works flawlessly on my wifi network.

I have a linksys E3200 router. I currently have WPA2 Personal as my wireless security. As a test I shut off the security and made it an open network and re-connected to it from my phone and there are no changes, still a greyed out icon.

My wife has a DroidX and its connected to the wifi network with no issues (with the WPA2 active as well as when the network was unsecure).

I am really frustrated and dont understand what is going on.

I would really appreciate any advice or insight as to what may be causing this problem.

I have also restarted my modem and router multiple times and restarted my phone. I made my phone forget my home network and then re-connected and I get the same results.

Does it connect to 3G/4G, or does the grey come up for all networks? When this happens to me it comes up for everything--not just WiFi.

Its only for my wifi. When i initially turn it on its blue for a couple seconds then switches to grey. 3g and 4g are both blue.

Ok. I've had this type of issue happen with my Dinc, so perhaps the same method of repair is in order: turn off your WiFi (on your phone), turn off any programs using the WiFi, get onto 3G/4G, and after a half an hour, try again. Whenever I used something (like an app) that used WiFi and essentially forced a WiFi connection my Dinc went nuts and i'd get that grey WiFi thinger. After waiting with it off for a half an hour, it would work 9 times out of 10.

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it.

I factory reset my phone and it didnt work so I factory reset my router and it works now. I put the same security protection as well and now its blue.

Now I have to sit here and re-set up my phone again, but at least I have wifi now :)

Hi everyone;

I've been working on wifi connectivity issues with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the reboot problem with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which is also caused by wifi).

Although I have not fully fixed the Tab the following steps move you in the right direction (towards being able to use the net).

(1) Change the name of your router (SSID) so that it is (a) one word (b) all lower case
---- eg. paid

(2) Make sure the password to your router's wireless is all uppercase letters
----- eg. EATBREAD

if you are still tearing your hair out here are a few more ways (this fixed my Galaxy Nexus):

(1) Reset (turn off and on) the wifi on your device
(2) Reset (turn off and on) your router
(2.1) while your router is turning back on go into an area where you get 3G or H or E network connectivity so that the bars on your phone are blue (if they are grey you are not connected to Google servers). This area can be outside the range of your router (maybe it should be, but you can try both ways)
(3) Come back into the range of your router and hopefully yay!

Cheers,

Carll Tee

Based on the last post, this is how i resolved the issue without restarting the phone. Just a workaround.

Turned off wifi.
Manually turned on 3G.
When synch started up, turned wifi back on.
Wifi signal no longer greyed out and synch working again.

Hello,

I am also having this problem and I would say it started about 2 months ago. I have the GNex running stock 4.0.4.

Initially when I connect to wifi at home (Verizon Fios G connection, WPA2) everything connects appropriately, so the wifi symbol is blue along with the cell signal strength. Randomly when I check my phone an hour later, the wifi and cell signal symbols are grey. I can resolve this by turning wifi off on my Gnex, it then connects to 4G (blue) then I turn Wifi back on and it connects, blue.

However a few hours later, it may happen again. What causes this? Nothing with in my home wireless set up has changed in the last 6 months.

I see the work arounds listed above, and I may try them, but is this a documented issue with the Gnex? Is there a permanent fix for this?

Re: Galaxy Nexus, wifi greyed out but works on other networks, he

Try settings>apps>(ALL apps tab)>Google Services Framework>Clear data>Force stop and then reboot.

I've had this problem (up until about 15min ago), where my data connectivity icons for wifi and 3g/4g showed connected and i had access, but they are grayed out/not blue. It was suggested to me that grayed icons WITH connectivity indicates an inability for "Google data" to sync properly with its servers (maybe that meant automatically, because i could manually do it in Settings it seemed...) Anyway, after screwing around for a while, uninstalling/re-installing various google apps, i started looking in the Settings>Apps for google-related stuff, and remembered about the update to 4.0.4 where many ppl had to "Clear data" from the Google Services Framework app (system app i guess) and then they were able to update to 4.0.4.

Hope it helps.

Similar problem here, WIFI at home works great, it's when I'm at work is when I get the grey out icon, with No working wifi. 3g works.
Edit: erased all data and a factory reset to get going again.

The reason why the WiFi icon is grey but you can still get out to the internet is bacause the device cannot get to the Google Market. The icon will turn blue when the device makes a successful connection to this site.
I have run some tests and found that TCP Port 5228 outbound must be open on your firewall to get to the Google Market site. Verify that this port is open, then turn off WiFi on the device and turn it back on. The icon should turn blue within a minute or so.

Hope this helps.

PS: if you're having trouble using Google Now Voice Recognition, open TCP Port 14259 outbound.

I had this exact same problem after the JB update and tried all of the suggested "fixes" and ultimately had to do a factor reset in order to fix the problem.

I had to travel out of town yesterday and I had zero connection for over an hour (like, NOTHING) and I had gray 3G bars for most of the day in a known 4G area (Purdue Univ. campus, where LTE was beta-tested!!). It was almost like my phone doesn't like being out of my zip code, or it's not a Big Ten fan. Can anybody possibly explain why? I did a reboot and it took like 7 minutes to fully reboot with no better signal.

The problem is caused by AES setting in wireless router security. If you set it to TKIP the problem regarding your grey wireless icon will be solved because some devices are not 100% compatible with AES. When it's grey it says that your phone is connected to the wireless router but with no internet connectivity.
LET US KNOW IF IT HAS SOLVED YOUR PROBLEM. Good luck!
