Galaxy Note 10.1: Battery life way short of the suggested 9 hours

I really hope that this post is the last one in this thread. The OP has every right to complain, and every right to believe that in his experience, he is getting poor battery performance.
2 pages of posters (myself included) have attempted to reason with him when in fact, he was never asking for a solution or an explanation. We all have different expectations and we all use our tablets differently. Let it go people.

I've actually gotten some useful suggestions here, it's not a bad thread if you filter out the negativity.

The OP does have a valid complaint, but he doesn't have to come in after every other post and repeat that complaint. It's a valid topic after all, let the rest of us who also feel the pain of short battery life but actually want to do something about it continue discussing it.

I don't want suggestions like everyone one here keeps on wanting to lol.... I know I can do x y and z

My opinion is why should I budge? I was basing this on similar conditions and the iPad lasted longer. It isn't a deal breaker and can live with it but they should of added a bigger battery

.....as my old Gran used to say ..." God helps them who help themselves", and no, it's not the shoplifters motto, it actually makes sense !

Your point? This is a complaint I have not looking for help because as I have said plenty of times already.... I am not changing how I use my tablet phone or otherwise. I have always believed Android is a battery hog compared to ios... 4 hours of screen time is horrendous considering I can get double under the same conditions of use on a competition product. Yes I would kept my iPad if battery life was my sole want which it isn't.... I prefer Android faults and all. I just think they need to put a bigger battery in it or Google needs to optimize Android better. I had the same problem with the nexus 5 and sold it for a note 3 which I easily get around 5-6 hours of screen time on my phone which is pretty amazing

Man I really really want to love this device. I downloaded the KitKat update via Kies. I heard it would improve battery life and also lag issues.

I have been using Nova Launcher to get rid of lag and it worked. I'm also not rooted as I wanted to wait to see if KitKat would help.

When I got the device back in November I noticed that the clock would stop working, the back of the Note would heat up, and battery life would plummet. I mean it would go from 100% to 50% in an hour and I was using it to check email and read the WSJ.

That's when I installed Nova, after wiping it and starting over.

Nova definitely helped so I suspect it has to do with TouchWiz.

So now? After installing KitKat and still using Nova?

I got up this AM. Battery was at 67% as I had not charged it for two days. No big deal.

I started reading email and NY Times online and within 15 minutes I looked up and noticed battery was at 52%. 10 minutes later 29% and the back of it was heating up.

Looked at what was running in background and Chrome as well as Gmail. I ended both and within another 5 minutes I was at 12%.

I'm beyond frustrated with this thing. I want to love it. I used the pen all the time to take notes and it's especially great with Evernote new pen feature.

But this is beyond ridiculous now. I don't want to go back to iPad but I cannot deal with a device that is unrealiable battery wise. I don't get it.

Maybe I just need to root it and be done with it. And I'm done doing factory reboot. I've done it twice and shouldn't even have to do it once.

Maybe you got a lemon. It sucks but it happens. I've gotten two days out of moderate usage (kindle, browsing) and I tend to get about a 8-10 hours out of heavy use. I'm stock, but I have my brightness at around 40%, and I've turned off a lot of the extra features. If a factory reset doesn't fix it, take it in. You're under warranty.

Take it in to where? I got it on Amazon. Do I need to send it in to Samsung? Does rooting help with battery life?

It could also be a rogue app. Some apps are supposedly battery killers such as the NY Times app. The Samsung Push service also drinks a lot of juice... try disabling both through the Application Manager and see if that helps.

Does rooting help with battery life?

Rooting doesn't help with anything by itself. It can give you access to removing things that could be causing issues, but you can identify and remove or disable those things without root in almost every case.

Unlocking the boot loader (wipes device) gives you the ability to install a new kernel and/or ROM but neither ought to be necessary to get normal performance out of your device.

If you are considering a return or exchange, the first point of contact should always be the retailer, so yes talk to Amazon first and go from there.

There are a few threads about troubleshooting battery life, it may be worth using those as step 1.

I would absolutely not root if you're asking that question. Rooting by itself won't do anything but grant you root access to the file directory. A Custom ROM may give you a marginal increase in battery life, but if your battery is draining as quickly as you claim it is on a fresh factory restore that leads me to think that you may have a hardware issue, possibly with the battery itself or a processor. The other possibility is that like the post above me suggests-- a rouge application. But as bad as the stock apps can be for battery life, I haven't had any experience near as bad as the time your describing. Check your battery statistics. Most of your battery drain should be due to the screen. Everything else should be marginal. If you have a rouge app it should show up on that list. I'd hold off on rooting and flashing. Read up on it before you take the dive, you can easily brick a device and if you get yourself stuck uprooted you're out of warranty.

I just have to say the table is super... Turned it on at 7:30 AM this morning and its now 6:30 PM that is it has run for 11 hours and battery is only at 50 percent, and have surfed the net, read e-book for a couple of hours and did some experiments on what new KIT CAT can do... All in all I'm very happy....

Wonder if it will go another 11 hours before zero battery charge or internal safety shut down....

My usage begs to differ....

I have the ipad mini with retina, the S3 phone and, of course, my Note, 2014 edition. Of all of them, the Note has the best battery life. I usually recharge every 3-4 days and I use it for around 4 hours a day. Couldn't be h pier.

By all means, if the Ipad is better for you then sell the 10.1 and buy another. Android is what it is.
