Galaxy S Captivate or Sony Ericsson X10 Xperia?

If someone here owns the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (I'm in Canada, it's about to be released by Rogers) could comment on whether this phone is the greatest thing since peanut butter :) and/or how it compares to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, I'd be grateful. Having a tough time deciding between the two.

Again, please ONLY comment if you own one or both of these phones; I've read so many articles and reviews, and watched YouTube videos, etc. that now I need to hear from someone who really uses these devices.

Thanks.

Own a galaxy, played with an Xperia and faced the same decision you are.

I think a big difference is that the Galaxy S phones support multitouch whereas the Xperia phones do not...and that is a hardware limitation, not one that can be fixed in software. For me that is a dealbreaker.

I say that with sadness as in general I have always preferred Ericsson and SE phones to Samsung ones...but those Europeans really seem to have dropped the ball on smartphones huh... ;)

You're in the captivate forum, so I'd bet that 95% or higher of readers have a Galaxy S class phone.

Here's my take - I updated to the Froyo beta, which for me fixed GPS. I love the phone, it totally rocks.

Things I love:
Swype
the screen
It's android - I get to mess with it
gps now works well
I can remote wipe the whole phone using the inbuilt exchange client

Things I hate:
VPN (pptp with encryption) doesn't work
It's not as secure as a blackberry

You need to decide just what it is you need the phone to do.

Hope this helps,

I have the Captivate and really like the phone - even with the 2.2 beta update, I still have issues with GPS with My Tracks and Navigation, but I get a quick lock when I am standing still. That said, it works good enough for me and Navigation fixes itself quickly when it gets me off track, so not a big problem unless you rely on it a lot. The Captivate is blazing fast and has a great development group, which the Xperia does not currently have. That means if you like to tinker with your phone, there will be more ROMs out for the Captivate to play around with.

The Xperia phone's lack of multi-touch is due to the fact that it is shipped with Android 1.6, and not a hardware issue. Once it is update to 2.1 or higher it will support multi-touch.

I think that the Rogers version is going to ship with 2.1, and that's one of the reasons I think I might be leaning more towards that one than the SE, which ships with 1.6 and no hint in sight of when it might be upgraded (SE is notorious for this). Thanks for your reply.

Thanks so much for your reply. I actually posted the same question (in reverse) in the SE board, so I'm waiting to hear if someone there will chime in. Decisions, decisions! :)

What about the fact that it does not have a flash, whereas the SE does? How are low-light pics coming out?

Thanks.

I've taken a lot of inside pics with the phone of my 2-year old and, as long as I set it to Action, they come out really good - better than the pictures (with flash) that I took with a Motorola Droid that I tried out. There's also a setting for Inside which takes good pictures too, as long as no one is in constant motion. I don't miss having a flash on the camera.

I've played with the X10 a few times and it doesn't hold a candle to my cappy. Part of that is the 1.6 factor, the other part is the wierd UI. It's not as intuitive as one would expect. And nothing out there can hold a candle to the cappy screen except iPhone4 and who wants one of those things? :)

I'm still on 2.1 (waiting for the official update) and the phone is plenty fast. It does have lag once in a while, but thats nothing that vodoo won't take care of when it is out for 2.2.

Good luck!

They both suck.

Wait a couple of months for dual-core, HSPA+, LTE and Android 3.

Get a phone built by HTC and running on a different carrier.

My $.02, having been there.

Not according to SE:

No Multi-Touch for Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson Reaffirms - Softpedia

?Multi-touch will not be a feature in future updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because the device does not support multi-touch due to her software and hardware configuration. The operation and user experience of the phone will be further improved and Sony Ericsson will come with her own intuitive way of, for example, zooming in and out,? Harold de Kort, communications manager at Sony Ericsson, states, according to a recent article on gsmhelpdesk.

Sounds like the Xperia won't be receiving 2.1 update then as multi-touch capabilities is a requirement for 2.1. You got me on this one...

It is getting the 2.1 update and will have multi-touch capabilities. I read an article on it a few weeks back on androidcentral's main page but there was no date given. The poster who stated no multi-touch was a little off with his post.

EDIT: I read another post regarding the no multi-touch. While the link I posted doesn't say anything about it, I thought 2.1 had multi-touch built in it from Google and was automatically on the device with 2.1. Looks like I'll be mistaken.

I have owned the Xperia X1 and now the Captivate. Sony E is terrible at updates and support. They make beautiful phones but always about two years late to the market.

I love the Captivate. Not perfect (no LEDs for letting you know that you have messages or for flash) Great screen and the Android platform appears to be getting more and more support for applications.

I pose a similar question, i got the x10 about ten days ago with ATT because it was relativly close to the hardware specs of the captivate and 100 dollars cheaper(at the time of purchase) now i see you can get the captivate on ATT's website for free with 2 year agreement. I have 30 days to exchange the phone. Im debating making the switch to the captivate if i cant get if for the same price i paid or cheaper. With the 2.1 update for the x10 supposed to be out this week or next I'm tempted to wait and see how things look after that. What do you guys think? keep the x10 or move to the captivate? My brother just got the captivate last week too btw, and i got the chance to mess around with it a little bit. Seems to be a bit faster and have things organized differently which i sort of like. Also has the MT and will be getting 2.2 officially soon where as i hear SE will be leaving the x10 after the 2.1 update. What to do!?!?
