Galaxy S3: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

By the way, this usually happens when im playing on my s3,with headset plugged in and talking with my gf at the same time.. then after some time, notification sound turning on without any notifications.. pls help anyone...

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

I have the same issue. Sometimes there are 5 or 6 notifications, one after the other. No apparent connection to any app. I'm not using Yahoo mall, which you mentioned in a subsequent post, so that's not the issue.

When we're traveling, I like to leave the phone on the bedside table as our kids are in several different time zones. I'm not going to kill the volume/vibration, but the notification sounds are obnoxious enough to make me want to do so.

Any ideas?

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

I hate to spoil everyones party, but there's so much crapware out there that it's pretty much impossible to tell you why your phone is doing this. The short & sweet answer is that it's NOT the default behavior of a normally operating phone to provide random audio notifications without an associated app generating them. Since the likelihood of your phone being the problem is rather low, it's probably some app/combination of apps that's causing the problem.
Solution: perform a Factory Reset (after backing up your contacts, calendar, SMS, Call Logs, etc.) and SKIP the initial Google account setup (this is crucial - this will keep the Google Play Store from automatically downloading all of your previous apps). Once the phone is configured, go back in and add your Google account.

DO NOT REINSTALL EVERY APP UNDER THE SUN!

Just update the preinstalled apps and use the phone for a few days. If the random notification problem is gone you've solved your basic problem - there's nothing wrong with the phone. Now install a handful of apps and wait a few more days before installing anything else.
If/when the problem starts happening again you know that you've installed some app that's causing the problem or that doesn't interact well with some other app (usually an app with a similar purpose, for example - two different messaging apps; or two social networking apps). So go back and uninstall the last batch of apps that you put on the phone (you are keeping track, right?).

When uninstalling apps, clear the cache and data for that app first. Do that in Application Manager.
That way, there won't be any pieces of it taking up space.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

I knew that mine wasn't anything listed so far and it was bugging me. I DO use my yahoo! mail and y! messenger, so I was certain it was none of those sounds. It turns out that on mine the NFC was enabled and every time I opened and closed my phone "wallet" my transit card was rubbing the back of the phone causing it to attempt S Beam, or NFC p2p transfer connection. Whew what a relief.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

i began to hear that little ringtone about three weeks ago and it was driving me crazy because i couldn't find were it came from, i even began wondering if it was just in my head
or some kind of tinnitus but thanks to you my problem is now solved :o)

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

Thanks. It was the Yahoo mail app that was doing it on my Note 2. Thank goodness it was easy to figure out.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

THANK YOU THANK YOU so much I went through all of my apps and still nothing.. Thank you for saving me all the trouble of deleting all of my apps and restarting. haha:)

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

I have this exact problem mentioned and I can't tell you how many people have told me to turn the sound off my email. This has been done and I still have this problem. At this point I just want to get rid of the phone because no one can fix it and I'm tired of getting woken up at 3am from this annoying noise.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

well, the yahoo notification sound is the sound I've been hearing and the emails match the times I've heard them. so, let's hope it works. I think it will. thanks

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

had the same problem as described in this post. tried to check everything, starting with format and re-installing the system and apps one by one (including disabling notifications sounds of course) and the sound unfortunately kept going on.

then, tried to check the option of something wrong with the system -
re-installed without connecting to the internet, didn't install any apps etc... and still, annoying sounds kept going on and on.

any further ideas?

Start by reading this thread, from the beginning, and see if any of the suggestions solve the problem. If not, you'll need to give us some more information to go on.

Welcome to the forums.

Is there any chance that this notification only goes off once every minute?

If so, open the Phone app, press the Menu button (the lighted button to the left of the physical Home button), select Call settings -> Call alert -> Call status tones and uncheck 'Minute minder'

If that's not the problem we'll need more information about the occurrence of the notification during calls.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

In my Nexus S the culprit was the weather clock app.
I was installed the app called Transparent Weather Clock.

Under the Notification settings of this app, Location Changes, Location Updates, Weather Updates, Notify on manual updates ( All these are play a sound when changes) were checked.

When I unchecked all these the mystery notification sound stopped.

Re: Mystery, Reoccuring Notification Sound

Ive had the same problem and it turns out it the noise your phone makes when it trying to connect with another device to transfer data, to turn it off go to settings, select more settings, turn off NFC under File/Data Transfer. Hope this helped :-)

Thanks this was sooooo helpful and it worked for me :))))))))
