Galaxy S3: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

Re: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

This method actually works. Worked for me in safe mode, was able to check for updates, however when restarted my phone again (normal mode) it showed modified again.

Re: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

Hi, I've had that same problem, the only remedy is to remember all the apps that has been installed on the device prior to having the "device modified" and uninstall them or:
Power down your device,
Power it back on with the volume key pressed down,
your device will boot in safe mode,
check the update and it will show the status as normal,
reboot the device again and the status will be back to modified.
Well at least you wouldn't have to uninstall the apps or even hard reset the device.

That's what I did, and it does the job for now.
Cheers

What kind of help are you looking for? Were you unaware that (except in limited circumstances) rooting generally makes receiving OS updates impossible?
Edit - limited circumstances being:
1. If you did not install an alternate Recovery method (TWRP; ClockWorkMod), you MAY be able to use https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...rg.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&token=l0Ta2wgi to "hide" the superuser binaries from the OTA checks.
2. If you did not freeze/remove any bloatware from the system

Re: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

Hi, Leonbakhan
When I inserted the new Sandisk ultra 64gb card while battery out or if the phone was powered down I got the device modified message when checked for sofware updates.
If you leave the phone powered on insert the micro sd card then go to menu settings and storage and mount the ext card it takes about 30 seconds and now the phone status is normal.and software updates now functions
Just some odd Samsung bug.every time I inserted the card with the phone powered down or powered down and removed the batery it threw the phone modified message when tried to do software update every time.
In addtion, the new Sandisk ultra 64gb card was a raw partition and it would not mount on the phone phone just gave preparing card message but would not format and mount the micro SD card so I formatted the Micro SD card with my PC to exFat and as said left phone powered on and inserted and mounted the card and worked fine for me.
Hope that helps

Yes, I'm aware this is a necropost, but I just had this issue just now. Using 64GB Sandisk Ultra and got the same issue and in About Device is said device status custom. Unmounted the card ad rebooted, and it worked fine

Re: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

Just wanted to say that I had the same issue (even without an SD card) and fixed by simply rebooting phone in safe mode.

Re: Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available...

Thanks a million!! My Galaxy Note 8.0 GT.5120 was getting this error as well after a week of usage! Just regular apps installed from Google Play,no rooting or hacking. A call to Samsung "support" gave me the ape-monkey-answer "reset the unit to factory settings" (yeah like I would like to do that every week when the error comes back!).
Powering down, removing my Sandisk 64GB SD-card, powering up, and after started, re-inserting the card, solved the problem! Now OTA updating works again!

It depends - what makes you think an update IS available?
What firmware does your phone currently have?
What model number/carrier/region?

Remove your SD card then boot into system recovery. Select 'wipe cache partion' and then reboot if successful. This worked for me :)

Turn your phone off and remove the micro sd. Then hold the power, home and volume up buttons together (whilst the phone is off) then the boot animation will start. Release the buttons and follow the on screen instructions to 'wipe cache partion'

Tried but afterwards it said àt the bottom 'currently unable to download. Please tey again later.' Or something like that.

I have taken unmounted my sim card so many times, restarted it so many times, put it thought same mode, put it through recovery mode twice and many of the other ways but none works! im am getting so frustrated at my phone!

My model number is GT-19300 , android ver. 4.1.2, device status modified. Before it said it is modified, it had said it was up to date when it wasn't so I tried everythin to fix it (kies wouldn't work for me) but I never found a solution, now its modified....

Your best bet is to reload the stock firmware manually using Odin - that way you'll get the latest firmware and not have to wonder what's been modified.

You can find the firmware here - mouse-over the region codes to find your country/carrier. You'll need to use Odin (just Google it - look for v3.07; find a source on XDA) to load the firmware. Instructions on how to use Odin can be found here.
