Galaxy S4: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I haven't read the whole thread but read enough to understand I had the same issue. Some videos were copying over and others copied corrupted. After reading this thread I decided to call Samsung regarding my Note 3 SD card issue. After transferring me to tech support the guy said he wanted to verify the card and he asked me to take it out, look on the back, and read off the model number. I stopped right there and told him there were no numbers. He then went on to say the card was counterfeit and there is a wide spread issue at the moment regardless of if you buy it from Amazon, Bestbuy or Walmart.
When I was having the issue mt transfer rate within the device was 3 mb tops. I just bought a new Sandisk and its transferring at 7 -10 mb. I transferred my vids and they all work at the moment. I'll update tomorrow and see if its still good.
Verify your card is legit. You can just Google images your card and make sure it looks right front and back.

You may have gotten a bogus card, but in my case it was a genuine SanDisk, verified by SanDisk because they provided a replacement by RMA.

Im going to look at my card in my phone when I can in a few moments. I'll let it be known if it's legit or not when I do! If it is, then the problems are likely not due to counterfeit cards.

Antonio - how could you verify the card is legit without opening the package, etc, before you buy?

Great reply and insight.

Well, if someone were to be having issues with memory on their SD card, it's *quite* likely that the packaging of the card has been opened to be able to use it and experience problems

Aaanndd I believe my SD card is a legit SanDisk 32GB one. I saw a long code on the back. So this problem is more likely a phone-specific problem than having a bad card.

Hmmm... my card has NO code on the back of it or the SD adapter. Yet, it has all the correct logos, etc.

This is what mine looked like (I forgot to take a pic of the front 😞):

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Can someone please list the steps to test my phone & SD card for this problem?
Is this repeatable or is it a random failure?

Thanks,

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

It happens a lot with Samsung phones. There's a 99.9% probability your card is fine. But the Samsung software just runs into some sort of failure at reading the card. It's a known problem.

If you really want to test this, you can see if anything gets corrupt by copying a large amount of data/files onto your card at one time. You can also make your camera save directly to your card and take a ton of pictures and videos, then wait a little to see if anything happens.

I was able to save a pretty large amount of data into my card for a day or so, but then it started corrupting most of my files once again awhile later. So I'm not sure how long it may take for it to start corrupting. But if it's persistent on keeping everything OK, then you'd possibly be in luck!

You might start by formatting the card in the device.....that seems to help a lot.

Are you saying that file corruption doesn't happen upon writing to the SD card? if you copy files, are they fine after the copy? Is it possible that old files (earlier copy to SD card) get corrupted when new files are copied, or are they damaged while just sitting there? Also, from what I have been reading here, it may be the TOC or system file structure & not the files that is being corrupted, as some have said that reformatting recovers the files. I am going to copy some pictures & leave them & see what happens.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Do you have any other device you can put the card in? I'm sure the files are OK on the card. It's the Samsung software that misreports file damage.

If you reformat the card, all data will be lost. Just to be clear, I was saying, for my part at least, reformat cards when new and before use in the device.

I seem to remember reading, in this thread, a couple of cases where reformatting the SD card restored the files. That lead me to believe that the format function just repaired the card & such. Was this info reported incorrectly? Did they possibly see the files from the system folder & think they were the restored files?
Thanks,

In the brave new world of computing, I'm sure it is possible that I'm making a mistake, but so far as I know formatting wipes a card (or other drives) completely clean. All data is lost. There are other card repair tools on desktop computers and recovery programs, such as fixing bad sectors or truncated chains of data, etc. (And there are some that have "unformat" commands if you were hasty and IF you haven't subsequently started writing new to the card...)

But formatting is supposed to wipe the card clean so far as I know. (Usually, if you go to the FORMAT command, that's exactly the warning that you will get.)

That is my understanding too. The only variable is whether you do a quick format, to wipe the TOC, or a deep format, which overwrites the files with zeros. I will assume that the poster that said to format the card had mistaken good files in system memory for those that were corrupted on the SD card & thought they had been restored.

Yea I think reformatting the card should wipe everything. I recall someone saying that they had their files still available as well - but I'm thinking that they probably did something else or didn't read their files correctly?

Are you saying that file corruption doesn't happen upon writing to the SD card? if you copy files, are they fine after the copy? Is it possible that old files (earlier copy to SD card) get corrupted when new files are copied, or are they damaged while just sitting there? I've noticed that if a file stayed fine for 'awhile,' it tends to stay fine and not become corrupt.
For example, I once copied a large amount of files onto the card to test if they work. They all stayed fine - and continued to do so after copying and saving additional files onto the card. Even if the newer files being added became corrupt, those original files stayed intact.

(However, it gets kinda weird in that if some files that you JUST added become corrupt, other previous files that were very recently added may also get affected... I haven't really seen a specific time frame in how recent the older file have to be fit then to be affected... But I would guess that a few minutes through a couple hours might be an approximate range..)

And if you had semi-recent files added, but they don't become corrupt right away, they might become corrupt after some amount of time (I never really could tell how long it would take, since I would just notice the files corrupt when I look back at them later). So 'some' files may become corrupt after sitting there for awhile, while others might not...

Anyways, I've tried opening the bad files on other devices by opening the uploaded corrupt files on my computer and my tablet. They were uploaded to Dropbox/Google+ automatically from my phone. [Some became corrupt before being able to upload while a majority were just fine]. The ones that were corrupt were not able to be opened on different devices. I also wasn't able to open files that I manually uploaded after they became corrupt.

You can see my last reply post, but I actually haven't tried reading the card directly on a different device I think... I have only tried looking at uploads of the corrupt files through Dropbox/Google+. Perhaps I can try using my tablet and read my card, which contains a number of bad files on it.

Yes, hmm. I thought it was just the Samsung software misreporting, but maybe it does corrupt the files also. Let us know what you see when you use the card in the tablet.

That's pretty much the way it worked for me also. Old files still seemed to be good, but recently added ones went bad, sometimes right away, sometimes after a few hours or days.

So I'm on my tablet right now and tried viewing the files on my SD card. I see that the files that were corrupt on my phone are also corrupt on the tablet. The files that are fine are also fine on the tablet. Here is what I can see:

reheja8u.jpg

upy2y3es.jpg

The first photo is a screenshot of one of the latest functional shots I took with my phone before the corruption started once again. The second is what I see when I try to view a corrupt photo with this tablet. The last is showing the cut-off of when the photos became corrupt. I didn't use the card for quite awhile, which would explain the difference in time when the photos went bad.

I now want to try to use my tablet and load this card with photos to see if the corruption has anything to do with the card. I'll first keep the card as is and see if the corruption "spreads" to other files. Then I'll reformat it through this device and try again to see if things work fine. If so, then the card would not be at fault with the corruption.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

My card does not corrupt anything but every 4/5 days I have to reformat it tried remounting it but says damaged files.this has only started to happen since my software was updated.so I am 100% believing it is Samsungs fault and not my cards

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I don't know what to do with this...

My 64gb micro SD card somehow unmounted from my Samsung Galaxy S4. I just had it sitting there idle, went to pick it up and it said the card was unmounted. I went to the settings to connect the card and the mount option was greyed out. So, I turned then phone off, then back on, I even pulled the battery a couple times and it is still greyed out. I then tried to put the card in my laptop. It won't even show up in the My Computer menu. Has the card gone bad? Any thoughts? Thanks!
