Galaxy S4: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

My card does not corrupt anything but every 4/5 days I have to reformat it tried remounting it but says damaged files.this has only started to happen since my software was updated.so I am 100% believing it is Samsungs fault and not my cards

Could you elaborate on why you need to reformat the card? Is your phone saying that files are damaged or something? Have your found files, like photos or music, that have been damaged/corrupted?
When your phone says 'damaged files,' is it a kind of notification of some sort?

I don't know what to do with this...

My 64gb micro SD card somehow unmounted from my Samsung Galaxy S4. I just had it sitting there idle, went to pick it up and it said the card was unmounted. I went to the settings to connect the card and the mount option was greyed out. So, I turned then phone off, then back on, I even pulled the battery a couple times and it is still greyed out. I then tried to put the card in my laptop. It won't even show up in the My Computer menu. Has the card gone bad? Any thoughts? Thanks!

I've heard of this problem of the phone unmounting the card befor, but never experienced it myself. It might be a separate problem from this unless files are becoming corrupt due to the unmounting.

I myself don't know how it may have happened, but it could always be possible your card died on you? It could be something totally different though (correct me if I'm wrong! ). Have you tried resetting your computer and retried reading the card? Or have it be connected to your computer for an extended amount of time? [Since sometimes my computer won't read devices or portable memory, so a restart may fix the problem. Or, I would let the device be plugged in for a *long* time until my computer finally picks it up].

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Hi

I'v got GS4 3g 8 cores

I just registered to reply on this thread . 6 months ago i bought SanDisk Ultra microSDHC UHS-I card for mobile devices and it started facing the same issue explained in here after i used it 1 month . i tried several ways to find out a proper solution i keept formating then copying some media files to the card and insert it to my S4 and with time it started showing this issue constantly then the last one it just lasted 3 days before it formated it self . Recently i met a friend of mine who has the same device with SDcard installed on it for long time and working fine then we discussed about my problem and i saw his card it was SanDisk? microSDHC™ memory card after i fed up with the ultra one i bought standard on to give it try . 15 days ago using the standard one with no issue ,even my device gets overheated it has not efffected it (heat is another issue in the S4) .

i suggest you guys give it a try and reply.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I Lee my card sit in the card slot in my laptop over night and nothing happened. It was like the card wasn't there. I think I'll be ordering a new card.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Did you just said Samsung SD card? How many gigabyte? Actually, the problem will usually occur at SD card 32gb and above. Below 32GB is fine.

I think my sister has an 8GB card in her GS4, and it seems like it's working fine. Perhaps there's a trend with more problems with larger cards.

During my last post ~10 days ago, I did manage to use the SD card on my tablet. I can't access my tablet right now, but from what I remember, I THINK I was able to take photos just fine and save them to the card without any problems. I don't think I have formatted the card to the tablet yet either - so it still has all the corrupt photos from my phone on it.

I tried viewing some of the corrupt photos with the tablet, which was when I noticed some weird things. I can't remember exactly, and I'll try to get back to the tablet and see it again, but from what I remember, when trying to view a corrupt photo, I sometimes was able to see one briefly, but then it (very) quickly gets blocked off with large gray squares, resulting in just a gray screen of the photo. [However, I could be recalling incorrectly, and those grayed out photos could possibly be photos taken by the tablet (and not the phone).. I have to see this again...]
I took screenshots of the process of the gray squares covering up the photo (by reopening the photo many times and getting a shot at different moments of the process).

If this means anything/is important, I can't quite remember if the pattern the squares have when the cover the photo is a specific and constant pattern, or if it's a completely random pattern every single time. I'm not sure if that would mean anything or not haha

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I purchased my SSGS4 from ATT this past Thanksgiving. When I received it, I placed a New, Patriot 8gb,class 10 SD card in it. The phone worked fine until the week I attended CES. I had most of my APPs,music, ringtones, and all of my CES and other important photos placed on the SD card for a total of about 2.5gb.I noticed one morning that most of my APP icons were greyed out,and when I tried to launch them, the phone said application not installed.I checked my phone's storage and in the SD card section it said "insert SD card". I tried reinserting the card and did several reboots, but the phone would not see the SD card. I tried to read the card on my PC, but it wouldn't recognize the card. I lost all data on the SD card. Also, I tried to access Google Play Store(this APP was located on the devices memory) and could not. The phone gave me an error but I do not remember what it said. I was forced to do a factory reset and Download all of my Apps again.
I placed another New Patriot SD card, the same size* as the first one in the phone, but this time I didn't move any APPS to the SD card. All that was on the SD card was my music, ringtones and alarm sounds. There was less than 1gb used.
Yesterday, my alarm went off as usual, but the alarm tone defaulted to one of the preloaded sounds on the phone's memory instead of the sound I selected from my SD card. I checked the phones storage and in the SD section, it said to insert an SD card. The same thing happened again, I lost another SD card. This time everything else on the phone seems to be OK except for the SD card

Sorry to hear of your experience!

As for the apps: I recall that awhile ago Samsung had problems/didn't want apps to be installed on the SD card or something. I know we are able to do that now, but it feels like sometime last year, apps would tend to have problems if they were on the SD card (unless they were completely able to be installed onto one).
I had quite a few apps that also had a gray SD card icon instead of the apps normal icon when I had the apps on my card. Some of the apps lost all their data since I had to uninstall then reinstall them to have them wiring again. Some apps, however, we're able to stay intact.. So it's possibly no doubt that this issue not only affects typical media files, but also some apps (perhaps more often to the ones that aren't quite capable of being in an SD card..?). I actually forgot about my apps malfunctioning when on the card..

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

This is NOT an SD card/brand issue, nor is it a Samsung/Galaxy S4 issue - it is an Android issue, something to do with the way the operating system interacts/communicates with the external storage card.

I am experiencing this same exact issue on my LG Optimus G Pro! :-(

Have to agree here. Am having the same issues with my Xperia Z1

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I never had any problems with my 8gb or 16gb sd card either. I just put in a 32gb card last week and it was fine until today. Now I can't reinstall some apps or move apps back to sd card...

Is the device you're having the problem with a Galaxy S4 as well, or a different phone?

Woah very interesting! Are there any differences in the problems between your phone (G Pro or Z1) and what's been explained here?

Perhaps this is an issue with the phones (or the OS) incorrectly working with larger SD cards? It seems to be that smaller cards (like 8GB or so) tend to do better than larger ones (notably 64GB cards)..

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I've been running SanDisk 32g class 10 in my Z1S with zero issues. I have over 20g's worth of media and music this came straight off of my Lumia 810 without any formatting. If you do run into issues like I did when it was in my 810. I would have to do a repair using the laptop when ever a file got corrupted during a transfer. My Z1S doesn't suffer from this unlike the 810 did.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

So on my tablet, I've found out that the photos I explained earlier (graying out in blocks) were taken on the tablet itself, I believe... Before taking them, I copied basically every photo I had on the tablet onto the SD card. A great deal of the photos copied over actually became corrupt (to the tablet, they are just blank, as seen in some photos). So it is either the SD card or perhaps the OS (I have 4.2.1) that may be causing the problem. Here is what I see in my gallery for the SD card folder (showing that at a point all of the copied photos became corrupt, and that a few made it through) as well as snapshots of the process of a photo 'boxing' out:

Note that the screenshots were taken by going to the photo and screenshotting right away over and over again to get various points of the process. So when it boxes out, its pattern is completely different..

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I needed a new sd card for vacation pics. After reading all of these, I got afraid to buy ANYTHING. Finally went to Best Buy and asked what to get. The Samsung area was packed but I waited and asked. They said they have only seen ONE INCIDENT (ha ha) of files being corrupted and that was just last week. They suggested the Samsung 32gb class 10. I bought it and had THEM install. They didn't format, just took out my old trusty 6gb that I've used for about 5 years and inserted the new one. I'm taking pics of anything and everything ahead of vacation and crossing my fingers. I won't be able to upload to Dropbox since I won't be using the phone out of the country. I really wanted the 64gb, but I was afraid to try. Hoping this will work out OK.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

I have a Droid Razr Maxx HD. My wife has a Droid Razr M. I too have the SD card 'it's fine then it can't read it' problems. They were two brand new Sandisk cards ( SanDisk Ultra 32 GB MicroSDHC C10/UHS1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-032G-AFFP-A) purchased directly from Amazon. They have both screwed up in each phone.

I don't think this is purely a Samsung issue.

Alright, this is getting a little out of hand.

Haha yes it is.. Since there have been other phones other than the GS4 apparently having similar problems (including some tablets), the problem's cause(s) does start to point towards the OS, or perhaps something else all these devices have in common. Or, maybe it's a combination of things that cause this problem, in that things have to be "just right" for something to go wrong..

Oh, I would like to mention that yesterday, I decided to clear out my 32GB SD card and format it through my computer. However, trying you use my PC to format it didn't work out, since my computer decided to not want to be able to perform the task (or, maybe the card was not letting the computer to format it?). I kept getting an error saying something like "Windows could not complete the operation..."
I wanted to format it to FAT32.

So with the card empty but not exactly formatted on the computer, I decided to just put it in my phone and let it be formatted there. Once it was formatted and accepted by the phone, I removed it and copied a couple GBs of music onto the card. I then replaced it back into my phone. (I think it would've been easier if I just used a USB and copied through the phone hahah)
Everything so far has been going good; and I'll try to update if something goes on.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Hi all, I have also got the sd card corruption issue, so took my phone to the Samsung store in they city (Sydney, Australia). They seem to have seen the issue before, but told me to call Samsung tech department. i was a little surprised that they say they have not heard of this issue before. So if people want Samsung to take this seriously we need to make sure Samsung kno about the issue, and its reported... For my call a reference number 8211798779 was made with Samsung. If you also have this isse.. please call them, and tell them about this reference, so this issue gets sorted and not fobbed of.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues

Ok, buy SAMSUNG only for Samsung device. Anything else and you're asking for problems. I've had a few problems with Sandisk in different devices and not all were Samsung. Never had a problem with a Samsung card in Samsung device. So stop posting about a problem with your card if it's not Samsung. It is inferior product at this point. It tired of receiving posts about a POS card not working. If you buy a cheap card on Amazon because it is the best deal, stop complaining about it not working. You get what you pay for. Most of them are knockoffs or old anyway.
