Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

I wish Samsung would add the gestures to unlock like lg and HTC have. Other than that there is nothing that draws me to the m8.

Already has it. Swipe on the home button/fingerprint sensor and you unlock the phone.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, S5 or M8?

If I can get out of my O2 contract early then I'll be getting the S5.

The M8 had the potential to tear Samsung a new one, but HTC really dropped the ball with the camera. The camera for me is one of the big selling points of a phone these days. My S4 camera has really helped me appreciate how valuable a good phone camera is.

Couple that with really no standout features on the M8, means it's trailing the S4 with its water and dust resistance and 4K video recording (really looking forward to that one!).

Don't get me wrong the M8 is a really nice phone and has the upper hand in terms of build quality and finish. But when it comes down to features it's lagging behind the S5.

I am talking about the double tap the screen. And that isn't gesture, that is using one of the buttons (home button fingerprint scanner)

Actually, it IS a swipe gesture on the home button. Remember it has a fingerprint scanner built in.

yes but you're missing the point. You still need that button(fingerprint scanner there) with HTC they added double tap to unlock, slide up to unlock so that you do not *NEED* those buttons. 2 completely different things.

OK your OP just wished for a gesture unlock on the S5 and there is one. Can't see the difference between a swipe on the home button and a knock knock on the screen but I suppose that's a matter of preference.

Like you the camera is one of the most important features and 4K is something I want on my next phone. I had the Z2 on my shortlist even though it's unknown if this will really come to any U.S. carrier. But with that said, the more video samples I've seen from the Z2, the more disappointed I got.

Such was not the case with the S5. It's 4K videos look excellent. With the HTC not even offering 4K, let alone 1080 60p, they got crossed off my list. Nice looking phone though with very few improvements. So it looks like an S5 for me.

Well not to mention HTC has multiple gestures to unlock with no buttons that do different things. Samsung does not. Not sure why this is so difficult for you to see the differences between the 2.

I believe the S5 lets you customize the swipe to unlock gesture according to what I've read but can't say from 1st hand experience. Again it's a matter of preference but one of the biggest complaints of the M7 was the location of the power button and the lack of a dedicated home button which allowed an unlock without fumbling for the power button. HTC addressed that problem in 2 ways, relocating the power button so it's more right hand friendly and adding the knock knock and other gestures.

The Galaxies ave no such ergonomic challenge given the dedicated home button allowing the phone to be unlocked in multiple ways.

Also, I believe their are 3rd party apps that give you gesture ability on any Android device.

I like where the power button is on my M7 but I realize I was in the minority

You don't need to use the finger print scanner to unlock.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8)?

One M8 seems really tall in height, almost Note 3 size. I don't like that form factor with long aspect ratio.
Plus aluminum body will easily get scratched, dented from drops and doesn't allow wireless charging, battery swapping, etc. I don't think good look/feel is worth trading off those things.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8)?

Does anyone have concerns that the first batch of S5's only have 16GB of storage (half of which is taken up by the OS/TouchWiz)? I know it has an SD slot but with the KitKat/SD card challenges, is 16GB enough?

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8)?

I'm still shopping but am leaning toward an M8 because I like the speakers, the look, low-light cam abilities, and mostly because I really like the Sense interface. I dislike the Samsung interface (touch wiz?) and icons. But, for the sake of shopping around, is there a way to bypass that or if I don't that that feature, do i just need to stay away form Samsungs? I'm not looking for a debate, I just want to figure out what the best for me is right now.

If you hate the touchwiz as it looks like, then your only option is to wait for a Google Play Edition, also you can always get the S5 and just use a Different launcher, problem is that all it does is to use another Interface to use your phone but it is over the existing Touchwiz, for some people that's enough, for others it's not.

In my case is all the contrary, I hate Sense for me it's horrible and too simple, plus a couple of years using Samsung phones that I just got used to Touchwiz, when I use my Asus Transformer I miss the Touchwiz interface, so obviously I'm buying the S5 over the HTC even when I was considering but couldn't pass Sense and the 4MB camera.

Re: Now that the HTC was announced, Galaxy S5 or HTC One (M8)?

Touchwiz on S5 is new version with clean simpler look/feel to it than previous version. It's lighter, snappier and looks different from the ones on last year's Samsung devices. For some reason, Samsung is not using any version number for touchwiz unlike HTC, which is adding to confusion and gives fuel to haters thinking it will be the same as before.
