Galaxy S5 Water Resistant?! Maybe "in your dreams" but not mine ;)

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

Looking at cases for the phones. Anyone know of a functional but VERY slim case? (I guess I'm not even going think about the wireless charging back now. I miss that...)

Thanks.

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

I certainly agree with a caveat emptor philosophy. There's no way I should have trusted the sales pitch only. But the promotional material I found online corroborated it and ironically, my great experience with the water resistant properties of my DNA which were not promoted at all, allowed me a sense of security that I would have typically ignored.

The overwhelming emotion from all of this is disappointment; in allowing my defenses to go down more than once, in the mfg for preying on wishful thinking consumers, the sales team for blindly promoting pie in the sky, verizon customer service for being pass the buck minded with a known issue and samsung service for being so arrogant.

I may start a poll thread just to see others experience with this. Thoughts?

Samsung isn't the only one to make these claims, otterbox, lifeproof, Seidio, and perhaps others claim to be waterproof. I have the otterbox armor on both the 5s and 4s, which originally retailed for $100,but even with the waterproof claim, I don't intentionally put it in water. Also none of them offer free phone replacement. lifeproof does offer water warranty, but you have to pay a fee, and if you do get water damage, you would have to pay a deductible, and it is only valid for 1 year. Also, it is only valid if purchased directly from lifeproof or Verizon.

Personally, if I planned to be going into the water intentionally, I would get something with a water guarantee.

I should also point out that depending on your region, Samsung does offer adh including water damage free of charge. But expect to pay substantially more than the $600 s5 price Verizon charges. Also, you would have to import it, and in case of warranty or adh claim, you would have to ship it back to the country of origin.

I don't know about other S5 usb ports but with mine closed securely, I can press on the usb door and it moves/gives. Hard to beleive that's secure enough for water to not find it's way into the phone. Does anyone else's phone like this?

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

Hi All,

I thought everyone would be assisted by this history of S5 'attitude' by Verizon and of my experience with these phones. A bit long, sorry, but I have read other threads about water damage and found nothing like the experience we have had.

My Verizon sales person advised me to get new phones on my family's account with the promotion launched this spring. A good deal and no extended contract or increased monthly costs, so we did it. She knew we were going on a few trips that were water involved and recommended the S5 due to its 'versatile lifestyle' abilities over the M8 I wanted which could not handle water exposure. I was replacing a DNA which was not noted as water resistant, but I had used it many times in the rain and on a rafting trip with no problems, great phone.

We bought three S5's and a Moto X that my daughter fell in love with. NOTE - even though the phones are billed monthly, the sales tax showed up on the next bill, a $350 extra for one month!

We all LOVE this phone! Awesome EQ! Until two weeks later when my display started to twitch and a day later became unresponsive. I drove over to the Verizon store and they took out the battery, reset it and it worked fine again. No explanation as to why it malfunctioned could be given.

The next week we went tubing and everyone used their S5's for pictures on the river. Gel skins and screen protectors for all. They all worked great. That night my phone got VERY hot and the display stopped working again. I took it to the Verizon store nearby and they said it had gotten water under the screen, therefore the heat and touchscreen problem. He showed me the droplets in the camera as well. I mentioned the problem from before and that I had only used it in the rain once, no immersion or splash exposure prior to the tubing. He said that it was not sealed properly at the factory and they replaced it with a refurbished unit under warranty with next day delivery.

The next week my daughters' godmother took them on a cruise and the rest of us went to water parks for the weekend. Confident in all our phones abilities to handle the trip.
Day 1 - had my S5 in my pocket and went into the shallow part of a pool following my son. When I took it out to snap a picture it would not turn on. Went back to my chair and checked it out, back on properly, bottom seal good. Hmmm. Took the back off and there's water in the spaces around the battery. uh oh. Took the old DNA away from my son, (who had received it to play games using wifi only, poor guy.) put the card back in and used it flawlessly the rest of the trip. Later I made sure the phone was together properly, all seals tight and put it into a baggie of water. Took it out and opened it - yep water inside. The seals were bad somewhere.
DAY 2 - Put my wife's S5 in a waterproof double seal phone "bag" to be careful the rest of the trip. Took it out to make a call or two then snapped some pictures while doing so as I was in the pool. It went under a few inches in my hand as I lost balance, dang. Checked it out and no water inside, Whew. Later I kept getting a notice that the headphones were plugged in when they were not. Then it started flickering the app manager continually. Dang Dang. Then, dead phone. Dang Dang Dang. It fired up later but would not charge and the mic no longer functioned. There was also visible corrosion in the headphone jack.
Day 3 - Daughter called me from sisters phone (?) She had dropped her S5 into ankle deep water and it was dead. It was dry inside but she put the parts into bags of rice anyway. (MotoX fine BTW)

Back to Verizon for replacements. I was told that Verizon was not handling S5 water related warantees and I had to speak with SAMSUNG! Big change. Had the sales rep call them with me there. Samsung rep was awful, saying they would probably not cover any of them but I could send them in for their techs to look them over and determine how long they had been 'under water', her words. It would take a few weeks and I would receive no phones to use while under investigation. She was very nasty even though it was a Verizon rep talking to her. Her responses were definitely canned and she had done this before. I mentioned the water baggie test I performed and she immediately said not to bother sending that one as I had voided the warranty by intentionally putting it into water! The Verizon rep requested this be escalated to a senior Samsung manager and they said she would get back with them...
All the store reps were gathered talking about the situation and forming contingencies for the next time one of their clients came in with this problem as they thought Verizon would cover any water damage. That's what they were selling and they were even pulling up Samsung commercials to make sure the water resistant feature was promoted. They found mention in the Samsung guide as well - up to 30 minutes in less than 1 meter of water! They were all very apologetic as I left the store with the dead phones.

I waited a few days and no reply from Samsung so we are now replacing them under insurance and paying deductibles. (MotoX and DNA still fine...)

Simply FYI.

If you posted this anecdote to 'FML' most responses would say you deserved it. When I was younger I had many watches that claimed to be WATERPROOF. In fine print they said things like "Up to 10m immersion in static pressure for three hours. Do not swim or play more than 1m below the surface as moving water can push past seals." I destroyed at least three such watches with water damage.

The S5 says 1m, 30 minutes. In practice this is almost NOTHING. A brand new, properly assembled and unused S5 will withstand tapwater in the sink or a dunk in the toilet. Getting a little rain on it. Very minor things. Repeatedly opening and closing the hull and ports, swimming with it, dropping more from than 1m height into ankle deep water (which flexes hull and lets water in) are all very bad ideas. This is a frightfully expensive lesson which I hope that others learn from.

Thank you so much for sharing and PLEASE be much more gentle with your third phone. This is the same principle as my curved phone can withstand flattening but I don't keep intentionally doing this for no reason...so maybe if I drop and step on it the phone *may* still be okay when I mess up.

You don't need a special Wireless charging back. All you need is a very small Qi charger module that will fit inside the OEM case like the one that I am using on my S5.

This one even comes with the charging pad, and a very reasonable price I might add.

* Qi Standard Wireless Charger kit 'mine' for $18.99

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

I bought a very expensive case. Broke the screen. Not covered. I'm sure nothing is covered. It was a life proof case. Don't waste your money. It's not thin either. I should have just stayed with my Casio commando.

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

I use common sense with these things. I would never take my phone into water. Period. I don't care how water proof it is. Simply because I know when it comes to warranty issues I'm at the mercy of the manufacturer. No matter what I say, its up to them to determine what happened to it.

Re: Water Damaged S5 was NOT Covered by Verizon!

If someone was going to buy an M8 anyways, why pressure them into an S5? Presumably they're similarly priced and same contract conditions, etc.

Consumers need to educate themselves and do some research before buying any products. It's a bad idea to rely on a sales person to tell you what to buy. Its not hard to understand specs like processor, memory and resolution etc.

If I put anything around my phone it will either cost ten bucks or have a physical damage guarantee. No one should pay good money for a case that does not guarantee its performance. A relative's child got a new phone free because water got in a crack - a defect - in his waterproof full surround case. And they are also sending him a brand new case with the same guarantee. Wish I remembered what the models were, because that is great service there.

What we need by now is a TRUE sealed hull phone. All the tech exists, biggest issue is speaker and mic quality but I don't mind my wireless audio accessories at all.

Depends on how the screen was impacted. The Lifeproof case at most has a thin plastic protector over the screen. For screen protection, a quality tempered glass screen protector would be the best bet.

Thanks, Relgoshan. Good words.

I just remembered that my Sony Cybershot has special care instructions for shooting in high humidity and additional info for exposure to sea spray. Like depowering it with the lens package fully extended to better ventilate the small parts. It was very responsible of them.

The fact that it's from China and always makes me shiver a bit only because I know how often they make and sell fake-branded items. Let us know how it turns out. I'm always curious with overseas orders. Small things I'll buy, bigger items and electrical items I tend to steer clear of.

I have two of these right now and they work fine in both S5 phones.

water resistant my bottom

I know it has been debated over and over with mixed feelings, but I believe the water resistance feature on the S5 is bogus. I just decided to clean my phone and after wetting my hand and soaping up I gently rubbed the phone on all sides. After that I rinsed my hand and using the wet hand, I cleaned the soap off the phone and at the end ran the phone under the faucet two-three times for about a second each time. Wiped the phone dry and decided to look under the hood for water infiltration.. The SIM/SD tray was wet and water came very close to the battery contacts (I guess I lucked out as no damage occurred). That's my story and I'm sticking to it :). S5 is not water resistant, not more than any other phone out there.

re: water resistant my butt

Well, can it be that your tray wasn't fully inserted? I've used an S5 in a pool and no water has come inside the phone... I don't own one, though, I tried it with a friend's phone. And he's still using it inside the pool whenever he gets a chance.

re: water resistant my butt

As stated, water resistance is good to depth and pressure of approximately three feet. Holding the phone under a running faucet may be too much pressure.
