Galaxy S8 or wait for Pixel 2?

S8 or Next Pixel

Fellow readers,

I'm returning to Android soon as my daily driver. I've previous been a Nexus guy after rolling with HTC and Samsung. HTC doesn't impress me much these days and Samsung's TW didn't age well imo when I had a S3 & S4. My last Android device was a Nexus 6 before giving the iPhone a shot for about a year. An enlightening experience, but now I'm having trouble deciding if I should move on to the S8 or Google's next Pixel. I'm a fan of how Google does Android but I know Samsung devices are always enjoyable to use as well. Having no real background with TW in the past 3 releases and understanding the Pixel is fairly close to what Nexus use to be. I could use some recommendations from anyone who has actually had the chance to use either device.

Re: S8 or Next Pixel

Touchwiz is much better now, but the next Pixel seems like it will obviously be the better device. Kinda depends on when you're making the switch... if it's in a month, S8, otherwise if it's in 6 months, next Pixel, right?

I use the last great Google phone, the Nexus 6P. I'll never own a Pixel.:p

I'm just wondering if the pixel 2 will be able to compete with the features/design. I love having vanilla up-to-date updates of Android OS and the Pixel's Camera was amazing, only time will tell.

From my perspective, if you want tons of annoying bloatware you can't disable (Samsung's apps) and super slow updates, then definitely the S8.

For me it would have to be the S8. After the Note 7 thing last year I turned towards the Pixel but it was always out of stock...not for days or weeks, but for months. That turned me away from it. So the S8 or S8+ will probably be my new phone.

I'll see what others reviews will be, then either get the S8, if all good, or go for the Note 8.

What Google does with the supply and demand of the Pixel 2 through the holidays and into Q2 of 2018 will influence my decision to get an S8 or not. There's nothing worse than wanting to purchase some tech and having to wait upwards of a month for it to become available.

I'd wait until October to decide if a Note 8 or Pixel 2 suits me best.

The Pixel and Galaxy S releases are flip flopped so much that they're 1+ (as in one upping) each other with each release.

I am having the same debate. I currently have a Nexus 6P. I had the S2, S3 & S4. At some point I had a note 4 but I can remember which phones it fit between Nexus 4, 5, 6P.

I HATED the S3 & S4. But the S2 will always be a classic (Did I have the first S I think I might have come to think of it). Either way here is what I feel about the various options.

Samsung: Great hardware no questions about it. But I hate their customizations, the needing a samsung account, etc.
Google: Good hardware, but not as good as Samsung (exception being the S3 & S4 which were awful). But I love the updated, I love the clean build etc.

To me it seems part of the question might come down to Bixby as well. Let's be honest Google's OK Google isn't even competing with S Voice. S Voice just isn't in the same league, heck I'm not convinced that OK Google isn't a major league baseball team while S Voice is still playing softball. I don't want to be stuck with the samsung Bixby if it just can't compete and I admit I'm more than a little annoyed that Samsung must try to copy Google on everything they do.

The Note 7 was awesome! It had the S7 edge features + the S Pen. That was the perfect phone for me, until it exploded. :(

The Note line is the only line of phones I'm truly satisfied with.

Did you actually use the S pen? In what situations?

Cheers

I love my Pixel XL and there's not a phone out right now that i would rather have. However what I've seen from the S8 leaks I'm pretty impressed. I figured the Pixel might break streak of getting a new phone yearly, but with the Pixel 2 getting more time to be even better and the S8, that streak will continue.

I feel like I'd wait on the pixel 2 just because you don't want to be like some pixel owners that have reception and Bluetooth issues.

One of the only advantage of the Pixel was Google Assistant.
With it rolling out to all latest devices, what's left ?
Hardware? It's hard to beat Samsung on this
Software? Unless you're fond of Vanilla, Touchwiz has actually gotten better and LIGHTER.

Plus, I don't trust Google for making a good looking and just because (a phone) is utilitarian does not mean it should be ugly...(IMO)

I am in this same internal debate. I have been really pleased with my 7 edge...Until recently when it has started to lag and freeze a bit.

I used it always. The situations I used it the most was when I needed to write a quick reminder note, a quick note on something I needed at the store, or used it to jot down anything else that came to mind quickly.
