Galaxy S9+ Black Crush and Gradient Banding Issues

I called Samsung and got the return label on deck. When asked why I sighted this problem as well as very poor resolution in slow motion video capture. Also, iMessage is elite. Still would recommend this device to most "no way in hell I'd get an iPhone" peeps since V30 and Pixel 2XL also have a turd screen. It is what it is. Hopefully for all yall sake its software not hardware related.

Nope. I've read your post several times now. No idea what you just said

You can't just return products to Samsung, you have to call and get "permission." So I did. I have the return label on deck or "ready to go."

Samsung asked "why?" I pointed out the reasons in this thread to them as well as iMessage and low low low resolution slo mo footage.

I also am not compelled at this stage in my life to continue battling the "but we all use iMessage" battle and I will not use Facebook (messaging work around). For this reason I will continue using my X.

Those things being said, I would still recommend the S9+ to people who refuse to consider iPhone because its not like the display on other Androids is any better.

In summary, I hope all of "ya'll" collectively have this issue righted by a software patch and that it isn't harware related.

Hope this helps.

Mine def. looks like that. This is a bummer. I was willing to deal with the loss of iMessage, but the compromises just keep adding up. Really like Sasmung Pay too.

Mine looks like that too. But for the life of me I cannot tell any significant black crush in a completely dark room. Maybe it happens when brightness is at 0% but I cannot tell because the rest of the scene is too dark for me anyway. But when I brighten it up to an acceptable viewing brightness I don't witness any issue.

Is this basic or adaptive display screen mode?

It helps to have a comparison device next to you if you are able too. The Black Panther trailer is an excellent example. Also, the opening scene in Jaws, when Chrissy is in the water and the camera focuses on her face for the first time she looks like an 8 bit video game. I figured that scene would be a good example because it was actually shot during the day and then artificially darkened in post production.

My comparison device is an s7 edge which also seems to have the same issue... So...

I tried the black panther trailer and everything looks good to me in a dark room. I don't have brightness at 0% though -- can't make out any dark areas in that low brightness. Is that the issue you are referring to?

My brightness isn't at zero either. Hold on I'll show you.

I always thought that was a compression artifact. But now that I've viewed it on my desktop monitor, I agree with you that I can spot black crushing.

If you want to see a compression artifact send a video to a friend using Android. The occurrence is more related to MMS limitations, but still.

I noticed black crush in a local copy (using the Samsung video player) of the Rocky mountain express imax documentary clip in YouTube.. the crush is more pronounced in 1080p version(had much lower bit rate) vs the 4k version.. also the crush vanishes when I played it in split screen mode. The black crush happened only when I played the video full screen. It's not happening at all in the split screen mode. Again this makes me think it's a software rather than a hardware issue.

It's a calibration issue so it's going to be there regardless of split screen etc. We'll just have to wait for Samsung to fix it (if they can).

Poor resolution with 960fps is normal. Change to 240fps for normal slo-mo.
You use iMessage but outside the US, no one really uses it.

Both are things you could have known before buying S9+.

If display is really you're issue than wait for possible fix, or buy Note 8 instead. If you already have iPhone X, I understand your decision.

But there are some things I noticed to this black crushing and that it's not always present under different circumstances (still the same device). So I hope it's software related. But on the other hand I see that some devices have more issues than others so that implies it could be hardware related.

Let's hope Samsung will investigate this issue and come with an answer.
