Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 - Personal Hotspot

I had connected my tablet via bluetooth with my iphone and accessed the personal hotspot to access the internet, which was fine, no problems accessing websites and whatnot, however, when I tried to sync my emails, I kept getting an error message saying that a wifi connection was required. How do I get the tablet setup so that it will recognise the personal hotspot connection when not in wifi range?
