Gallery Crashes When Scrolling...

wierd how this is happening all of a sudden. It must have something to do with the way the pictures are ordered by date....and a software glitch that isn't properly handling the date sorting.

ok so i removed all my photos and reloaded them a little at a time.. I have found out that i cannot load any photos taken in July, or it will crash.. I guess you cant have any photos over for over 2 months..Anyone else find this to be the case..

Not in my case, I loaded just photos from August, which was about 70 images. Still crashed.

@Todd... That was one of the first things I tried. At this point they've been deleted several times, so NO.... I wouldn't bet on that.

Mine was doing this the past two days but today, all is well. Weird?

Just a reminder to anyone following this thread, an SD card format and a factory reset was done with the same results, so it's it not an application conflict.

Just to note I removed all photos reformatted the card then about 30 photos at a time (starting with the most current) reloaded them, unplugging from the computer between each and checking it worked.. When I got to julys photos it would start to crash...maybe 2.2 will fix..

Did you completely remove the .thumbnails folder??

Someone touched on this earlier and I believe they are right when they say that the .thumbnails folder was corrupt. It would make sense as to why Gallery would crash when scrolling because it gets it info from .thumbnails.

Make sure you can see hidden folders when you plug your phone in.

This has happened to me too only once so im not really concerned about it yet but ill keep an eye on it. But here's a ??? Sometimes i get two random pics saved to my sd card almost look luke a pop-up

i had this issue start yesterday, i downloaded 3d gallery it will have to do for now. maybe ill try what everyone else is doing deleted all files and thumbnails from folder adn reload them back

Same Here

I just noticed this today for me as well. I have loaded tons of stuff, but I am pretty picky on what I load so no junk.

I only have 50+ pictures in several folders.

Symptoms are the exact same. View Thumbnail Photos vertically crashes on scroll. Horizontal is fine always.

Since the last time I KNOW this was working I have installed or updated:
Loader Pro
Astro File Manager
Beautiful Widgets
Bing
Google Sky Map
K-9 Mail
Key Ring
My Verizon Mobile
PhotoShop Express
PRO Zoom Camera 5x
Profile
pWall
RingTone

I have many of the apps you do. The thing that nullifies an app or apps causing the problem is that I've already wiped out my SD card, done a factory reset (twice), clicked one picture to let it to it's thing, then loaded a few images on at a time.

Despite this, the problem remains. The only answer I go from Motorola level 2 support was to get a replacement. They weren't even aware of a problem. I told them to have a look here.

Replacement comes tomorrow. We'll see what happens then..I'll update this thread as soon as I see if the gallery crashes or is stable on the replacement.

BTW, if you download 3D Gallery from the market I think you'll find everything works just fine. I don't like it though as image resolution sucks.

Bad news. I received my replacement DroidX today. Snapped on picture then loaded the 265 pictures I had back onto the SD card. Opened the gallery app...everything looks good until I get to August....CRASH, right back to category list.

So, this is not a defect with my original device or corrupted software. It doesn't like anything after August.

From what I've tested, this is some sort of bug within the gallery app. Guess I'll be calling Motorola again to let them know...

Good to know that just getting a replacement wont help... Hopefully 2.2 will make it all better. I went to the VZW store and the sales guy had ( what i take as the leaked 2.2) he took my card put in his phone and gallery worked just fine.. (I did notice that the 2.2 gallery UI looked alot like 3D gallery) but anyway it scrolled through all my photos just fine.. Come on 2.2!!!

Add another to this list - Mine started doing this last week as well. I've battery pulled, re-booted, and nothing changes. It still crashes every time I try to scroll.

Well, I don't know if this is isolated to just me/my X but what I have finally nailed down is that any images taken between August 3rd and August 5th were the culprit in my case.

I would have never found what images were causing the problem because the crashing back to category list only happens when viewing the thumbnails and viewing them horizontally, individually, another gallery app or copied to the PC and viewing them there did not cause an issue. There were no signs of a corrupt file even when examined on the PC. Exif was intact, date taken etc.

I took the images that seemed to be an issue and put them in their own folder (something like 20 images). That was the only folder that crashed. That is with still having over 200 images in the Camera Roll, so it's not a file size issue or total amount of images issue..

Those of you who still keep insisting something has been missed, like not seeing a hidden file or folder, or not deleting the thumbnail cache... it's been stated many times that those folders were deleted during testing as well as formatting the SD card...along with a factory reset....on a different device.

I don't really know the answer to exactly what happened, but I did find my problem. Hopefully you guys can find yours.

Don't know if this will help others or has already been mentioned, (not ready to read through 4 pages atm) but I personally solved the problem by using the 3D Gallery App.

There were 9 files of which I could not see icons but were still listed and portrayed as transparent thumbnails. If I tried to get info on them they would force the 3D Gallery to close as well. I was however, able to select and then delete them which VIOLA, solved my problem. I then uninstalled 3d gallery and was kosher pickles.

No idea where these files were or what they were but they were definitely the culprit.

Block Folder from Gallery

I know this isn't a solution, but one could also block a folder from being added to the Gallery. My issue arose from the "Download" directory on my SD card, which had numerous attachments from my Exchange Active-Sync. Once I added an empty ".nomedia" file in the Download directory, my Gallery stopped crashing.

Here is the thread I found regarding ".nomedia":
