Gaming on such a High Res Screen...

Is any one concerned about framerate while gaming on such a high resolution screen since the OMAP 4460 is using an older SGX 540 GPU (same architecture as used in galaxy/nexus S)?

I checked it out and at least they have overclocked it to about 384 MHz (Wikipedia) almost doubling the default clockrate, but still 720p is a lot of pixels to have to push even by today's High-end mobile GPU standards and I wonder if a chip that was first available in late 2007 will be up to the challenge.

I guess we'll have to wait and see once some good old benchmarks come out.

On a side note, I really hope Sprint gets a version of this phone.

galaxy nexus is worse than nexus s in the gaming area since it has the same GPU with a bigger resolution.
benchmarks confirms this.

Well Idk they certainly didn't hesitate to play minecraft mobile on the phone at their event last night and isn't that game slightly more demanding then lets say angry birds?

If that turns out to be true this will be a huge deal breaker for me. Why in world would they release a brand new phone with a brand new OS with such an outdated gpu...

I reallly wanted a future proof phone. This phone could come out 6 months ago and be obsolete wtf. This is really upsetting. I'll either be going with the IP4S or waiting for a new handset to be announced. Epic fail samsung, epic fail.

Thankfully gaming is not a big seller for me and I think a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion some. Okay, so high end 3D games might not work as well on this phone. I think most people are using tablets for these type of games anyways, plus a lot of gamers are likely to pick up a Vita anyways if they really want serious mobile gaming.

Minecraft did seem to be running fine last night, I honestly don't think we are going to miss out on much.

Obviously there are a few out there that really want to play some "serious" games on their phone, but I think it is a very small niche. Also way too much stock is being put into benchmark numbers.

Lets not jump to conclusions just yet. while I wouldn't be surprised if the framerates are lower than the Nexus S, the SGX 540 was a monster when it came out. It crushed games at 800x480 resolution. With the overclocked version in the OMAP, it could still deliver smooth game-play @ 720p. While it would be nice, I don't need it to be locked at 60FPS+.

Really disappointed. Can't go for a phone that I have to keep for 18 months when it is using old tech. Have to wait and see what comes next.

you don't need to put a finger on to see it is using old hardware.

Why are you still on this forum? And yes, you do need to put a finger on it to see how it will perform in real life. When do you think those benchmarks you linked were done? I don't think this device will have any trouble handling anything available on android now or in the near future.

It'd be interesting to see when those benchmarks were taken.

Also note that one of the added features in ICS is the ability to take advantage of hardware acceleration. So, even with identical hardware, the OS should be able to get better performance. Unfortunately, I don't know of any quantitative stats or benchmarks to show just how much improvement there is. But, more videos and hands-on should be coming to get a better idea.

You need to stay away from this forum since you don't care for the phone.

Thanks

I care the phone since I will buy it as soon as it will be available but what is the policy here?
Are we adults or bady?

I am replying to the OP, and I'm replying with facts, so what is your problem?
Are you a baby that don't want to see his toy offended? Are you joking?

well you're not acting like an adult. In a response... what is something with those benchmarks this phone cannot run? on any platform.

The Galaxy Nexus hardware is as good as it gets right now in every aspect save for the GPU. 3D gaming is a small part of what I use my phone for and as long as its smooth I can survive.

I'll go down the list of hardware.

CPU:
A9 based 1.2GHz dual core w/ NEON (nothing out right now is faster including A5 and exynos)

Video, Audio & Image Processors:
TI has always been known for their amazing DSPs, this is no different. Tough to make a direct comparison. They are at least on par with highest end standards, but I would wager the best.

RAM:
1GB LpDDR2 dual channel. Again on par with highest end products

Screen:
what can I say, its ridiculous. IMO it destroys everything else out right now.

Storage:
... no micro SD :( But option for lots of internal storage. (At least Sammies internal storage is really fast)

Cameras:
No comment yet.

NFC:
Check!

GPU:
In it's overclocked state, nothing is faster except Mali400 and SGX543MP2.

The only reason the GPU is even a question for me, is because of the insanely high resolution

Maybe this gpu is the best for all around including mobile gaming... The tegra 2 was best for gaming but other tasks weren't so great

Anybody who is worried about the GPU in this phone has a legitimate complaint. Yes, most everybody was expecting a MUCH higher-end GPU in Google's next flagship device.

But let's be serious and look at things from a real-world perspective instead of a theoretical perspective. This phone will be able to run any 3d game on the market now and coming out in the near future. It will run almost all games at a decent FPS. No...You may not be able to get 60 FPS out of the new Max Payne game when it hits, but you still should be able to enjoy smooth gameplay.
