After much phone nightmare over the past...oh, 3 months - I gave up on Sprint and joined Verizon on Friday night. It's going to get some getting used to, having to watch my minutes/data again (coming from the Sprint Unlimited). But I need better data access than Sprint has been giving me for SOME time.
Anyway, I went into Verizon with 3 phones in mind: Razr Maxx, Gnex, and the HTC Rezound.
Razr Maxx doesn't have a removable battery, so that was out. Then I almost went for the Rezound, but the Gnex screen was SO beautiful, I got suckered in.
Well, turns out it was a mistake.
You see, I'm also coming from the Galaxy SII from Sprint - had oodles of reception issues with that. I completely blame Samsung. But once again, their phones LOOK so pretty, and have so much promise, that I couldn't resist.
That was Friday night. By Saturday morning, I had no reception, no data, no mobile network...nada. Spent about 3 hours on the phone with Verizon CSR and Tech Support. Did a lot of trouble shooting and well...we came to the conclusion that either I had a lemon...or the Gnex with the ICS is just too new to hang on to.
Another thing - when I would go to Settings>About Phone>...there was an option on my phone that said, "System Tutorial" and then, "Learn how to use your phone". Well, obviously, I pressed it, and each time, it would give me the error message, "Unfortunately, Settings Has Just Stopped Working" and it would kick me back to the main screen. WTH?
I called the store and both managers, who own the Gnex, said they don't have that option on their phone. I called Tech Support again - they didn't have the option on their phone, either. Am I really that "special"?
Anyway, with all the other reception issues I was having with the Gnex, me and the Tech Support person had to go so far as to Reset the phone to factory setting and WIPE everything. That was when I decided I couldn't deal with another Samsung phone again....so I took the phone in to trade for the HTC Rezound.
When the store techs were looking at the phone in store, guess what? The "SystemTutorial" option was GONE. So weird! Anyone else have/had this on the Gnex?
Anyhow...what a gorgeous phone to look at, but I gave it up.
Here are my Pros/Cons with the phone, even though we had a very short relationship:
Pros:
* GORGEOUS screen
* GREAT noise cancellation on car Bluetooth (people didn't know I was calling from my car - which is a common complaint from my callers otherwise)
* NFC-capable
* Very fast processor
* Nice feel to the phone
* ICS, obvs
Cons:
* Poor speaker quality
* Difficulty hearing callers off Bluetooth
* Constant crashing of E-mail - would stop working/not sync
* Reception issues
* Data connection problems
* Mobile network connection loss
* Settings crashing constantly
It has its plus and minuses - and the issues I experienced may have been unique to my particular device (though I've read similar issues all over the net) - but I couldn't risk another troublesome phone. Had it not acted up so soon and left me with a gorgeous paperweight of a phone, I'd have hung on to it. But...it wasn't operating as a phone, so it defeated the whole purpose of my switching to Verizon for better data (since my Gnex received no data), so it had to go.
I'll be keeping an eye on this forum to see how others do with it. I wish I could have kept it, because it was SO PRETTY, but it was not meant to be.
