Gave Up the Genx

After much phone nightmare over the past...oh, 3 months - I gave up on Sprint and joined Verizon on Friday night. It's going to get some getting used to, having to watch my minutes/data again (coming from the Sprint Unlimited). But I need better data access than Sprint has been giving me for SOME time.

Anyway, I went into Verizon with 3 phones in mind: Razr Maxx, Gnex, and the HTC Rezound.

Razr Maxx doesn't have a removable battery, so that was out. Then I almost went for the Rezound, but the Gnex screen was SO beautiful, I got suckered in.

Well, turns out it was a mistake.

You see, I'm also coming from the Galaxy SII from Sprint - had oodles of reception issues with that. I completely blame Samsung. But once again, their phones LOOK so pretty, and have so much promise, that I couldn't resist.

That was Friday night. By Saturday morning, I had no reception, no data, no mobile network...nada. Spent about 3 hours on the phone with Verizon CSR and Tech Support. Did a lot of trouble shooting and well...we came to the conclusion that either I had a lemon...or the Gnex with the ICS is just too new to hang on to.

Another thing - when I would go to Settings>About Phone>...there was an option on my phone that said, "System Tutorial" and then, "Learn how to use your phone". Well, obviously, I pressed it, and each time, it would give me the error message, "Unfortunately, Settings Has Just Stopped Working" and it would kick me back to the main screen. WTH?

I called the store and both managers, who own the Gnex, said they don't have that option on their phone. I called Tech Support again - they didn't have the option on their phone, either. Am I really that "special"?

Anyway, with all the other reception issues I was having with the Gnex, me and the Tech Support person had to go so far as to Reset the phone to factory setting and WIPE everything. That was when I decided I couldn't deal with another Samsung phone again....so I took the phone in to trade for the HTC Rezound.

When the store techs were looking at the phone in store, guess what? The "SystemTutorial" option was GONE. So weird! Anyone else have/had this on the Gnex?

Anyhow...what a gorgeous phone to look at, but I gave it up.

Here are my Pros/Cons with the phone, even though we had a very short relationship:

Pros:

* GORGEOUS screen
* GREAT noise cancellation on car Bluetooth (people didn't know I was calling from my car - which is a common complaint from my callers otherwise)
* NFC-capable
* Very fast processor
* Nice feel to the phone
* ICS, obvs

Cons:
* Poor speaker quality
* Difficulty hearing callers off Bluetooth
* Constant crashing of E-mail - would stop working/not sync
* Reception issues
* Data connection problems
* Mobile network connection loss
* Settings crashing constantly

It has its plus and minuses - and the issues I experienced may have been unique to my particular device (though I've read similar issues all over the net) - but I couldn't risk another troublesome phone. Had it not acted up so soon and left me with a gorgeous paperweight of a phone, I'd have hung on to it. But...it wasn't operating as a phone, so it defeated the whole purpose of my switching to Verizon for better data (since my Gnex received no data), so it had to go.

I'll be keeping an eye on this forum to see how others do with it. I wish I could have kept it, because it was SO PRETTY, but it was not meant to be.

A helpful anecdote. The Max doesn't need a removable battery with smart actions and basically 2 regular batteries built in. I depend on spares but even I would consider the maxx and I've been waiting for a good Samsung phone on verizon for a while. Cell phones shouldn't suffer poor reception but have every other ability. The PHONE function should be priority since it is after all a phone.

I have "System Tutorial" on my phone under "About Phone" and it makes my settings crash too, just in case you were wondering. Wouldn't worry about it though if you already know how to use the phone

YES! That's what it's called - System Tutorial (I changed it in my OP). But don't you want to know why it's there and why it makes the settings crash? But if you reset your phone to factory settings - it will disappear. Weird, right?

Exactly, which is why I took the Gnex back. I need the phone to be a phone, first and foremost, and it didn't seem to be able to do that for me.

No reception issues for me. I took my phone on a trip to the mountains and it was great... better than the gf's iphone4. Reception issues seem to be hit or miss and the leaked basebands seem to help some. Im not going to install them as i dont want to fix something that isnt broken.

No reception issues here, I only use BT calling and it's loud and clear.
I have noticed that the speaker is low depending on what I'm watching. Some youtube videos sound louder than others, I actually turn the volume down because it rings too loud.

I do not have the system tutorial under about phone.

You might have had a defective Nexus. i never had any of of the problems you have had except for really low speaker which I now use volume+ to help with that. That said the Rezound is a nice phone too. I played with it. I just could never go back to Gingerbread after having ICS

Reception issues with the Sprint, and then with the nexus? Was this all at your home, or was this anywhere you went?

Though it is not important at this point. Just wondering if you live in a dead spot like I did once.. This was the reason I went from Sprint to VZW, but the problem existed with both carriers. Instead of switching phones or carriers again, I moved and my problems were solved..

Hope you find what you are looking for.

You had a defective unit, my first unit had similiar reception issues, got a new Gnex and all is wonderful with the world!

I had a four bionics and all of them had data problems i got the gnex and havent had any problems. No service lost bettery is great ..plus it was free cause of all the bad bionics i got couldnt be happier

Well thanks for the story hope u have a nice 2 years with your HTC phone. Nothing can beat a nexus. Just have to learn how to learn to use her. I'm still rocking my release day nexus. No issues and I've been all around the USA

I had a GNex for 1 week and had nothing but problems with the radio, no data at times & sometimes no connection at all.

Took that back and exchanged it for another GNex and I couldn't be happier.

I also have a Bionic and IMO the GNex is a much sweeter phone, the only thing I miss is being able to do HDMI out to my TV which isn't that big of a deal cuz I can use my XoomForums for that. The other issueis the availability of accessories, I miss having a dock to place my phone into at night.

The reception issues that the Op states sounds like a porting issue.

When you switched to Verizon...did you port the same number you had from sprint over? If so...your issues would have easily been resolved with a new number from Verizon and not porting the number from sprint.

I have had the same issue...when porting numbers to different carriers...only reason I mention it.

The phone is awesome but the call quality is crap where I live. With full signal or no signal it all sounds the same. According to the people I have called, they said I either sound like I am under water talking or I'm cutting out every 5 secs.

I tried the leaked radios and have the same experience.

Had problems with the first 3 GN's and the 4th was a charm. Best phone I have ever owned and Verizon BLOWS away Sprint in reception quality and data speeds. Im in NYC.
