Gestures to turn on when always on turned off

I have tried this to see if it extends battery, but I cannot get gesture to turn on screen. I have to touch the watch face to turn it on.
I can see the gesture helping to scroll through text window, so I think it is responsive.
Is there an issue.. Just got the new watch and it updated the OS upon setup, 1.4.0.2576000.

I have a better handle on it now. I have it always on and it goes to ambient quickly, which is good. Then it turns on with flick of the wrist. I can easily get a full day, so am satisfied with that.
