Getting Rid of HTC 10

Hungry? I'm happy with the camera (and the pie), but Google photos integration is too slow and is horrible as gallery app trying to view local folders.

A camera update that changes the way pictures look has to be an OTA. Qualcomm and Sony write shared objects (think of them as drivers) for the Linux kernel that controls the hardware features and functions. Those are what turns points of light into an actual photo.

Updates that do things like fix shutter timing or affect/add features like camera modes or settings are done in the app update.

Thanks Jerry, so I suppose I haven't actually received the update that will affect the camera's ability to control highlight/overexposure in HDR mode or the focusing problem I'm experiencing? I'm really trying to like this phone, but so far the camera experience seriously has me doubtful. IMO the 6p camera is so much better and I'm just floored by that. I wouldn't argue this camera if it was early 2015, well yes I would with the focusing issue. Lol! So, I really need that update in order to change my opinion. Otherwise, this baby goes back to T-Mobile before the 14th day.

I would actually argue that for some people, the iPhone SE is still the one device for everything. For some, it isn't, but for me, it's a solid experience and the main camera is good in its own right so a point and shoot would be a downgrade. Had no problem reading on it, in fact, one of my favorite things to do is to eat with one hand and hold and read with the other. That phone makes it so easy to make that happen.

Too small and no OIS.

I don't think one's intelligence is an issue when it comes to how they choose to spend their play money. Not to mention, I always have the option to sell or return a device once I make a decision. I have owned many HTC devices and many of them have had similar issues to the HTC 10. I had the m7,m8, EVO 4g, EVO 3d, and the EVO 4g LTE. Don't call me a hater. It should be obvious that i want HTC to succeed, but because I've bought so many versions of these phones, I also get to give my opinion without being considered a troll or hater. In fact, I would be very qualified to give an honest opinion as my bias is obviously toward HTC rather than against. And, as it stands without the camera update, this camera is garbage and there's no way HTC should have let it hit stores with these issues. They keep shooting themselves in the foot. Are they stupid or what? See these pics attached. The one that has blown highlights and lack of detail is taken with a device that's 8 months newer than my Nexus 6p. WTF!? So, I hope Google does not give HTC the keys to camera software engineering on their next version of the Nexus. Please Google noooooo! Let HTC handle audio, but please restrict then from having any camera software input. They're clueless in a market where everyone that matters are making damn good cameras.

Honestly, I'd assume any phone camera would blow out a hightlight like that. My DSLR would blow out that highlight, especially if I metered on the dark mat. A tiny sensor like a phone camera has cannot handle that much dynamic range--not without computational magic. You'd need in camera HDR, and aggressive HDR at that, to handle the extremes you see here.

That's exactly what I eluded to in my reply. If anything the exposure of the HTC 10 shot is likely to be correct, given how the metering was applied for the shot. Auto-HDR would have been one way to yield the results the poster expected. The other way would have been to selectively focus on the window in so that the exposure would have preserved the highlights, but the rest of the scene would be very dark.

I showed 2 pics for the sake of comparison and although the back window detail through the glass is obscure on both accounts, the Nexus 6p gets considerably more detail included in the pic. I've taken many other comparison shots and the 10 continues to struggle with HDR highlight areas, and considerably more than the 6P. I'm aware that there's a software update coming to correct this issue. But, I'm just dubious because this exposure issue has followed them across all of the HTC devices that I've owned. It speaks to the camera software engineers inability to properly match the hardware to the software to create the best images given that the hardware is nearly the best you can get on a cell phone.

Unfortunately I just decided to go back to my iPhone from a T-Mobile variant. The screen issue with polarized sunglasses is a deal breaker for me :/ as silly as it sounds I don't feel like I should have to buy new sunglass or mold my sunglasses choice around the screen on my phone. It should just work.

The polarization thing is kind of a bummer. Just standing outside comparing my Moto X second gen to the HTC 10 screen, still prefer the Moto X. I know the Moto X screen ain't the greatest, but at least its easier to see outside. I think if HTC went with an AMOLED screen it'd be a killer device. I loved the screen on the HTC one A9, hated the battery life tho.

Yeah. It's really a shame but the polarization kills it for me. I use my phone while I drive for navigation and music (shhhhh! I'm careful) and it's really annoying to have to take my sunglasses off every single time or to see when I need to make a turn. :/

Is the screen really that bad with sunglasses? Even with auto brightness turned on, while outdoors? It really isn't a deal breaker for me personally as I dont wear those kind of sunglasses.

This this so many times this. Its just a boneheaded move by HTC

Yes. It honestly is. You cannot read it AT ALL unless it's very close to your face or on an angle which is not safe at all. It makes me so sad. Lol.

LOL, I don't like the polarization problem either but it is perfectly viewable when in landscape mode so nav and music while in the car shouldn't be an issue unless your car mount keeps it from being placed in landscape mode.

Mines going back and I'm gonna keep the 5X a little longer. Couple little things like the screen polarization, that I just plugged it in for 30 mins and it didn't charge at all. Stuck on 39% the entire time had to restart the phone. Camera is good, but I still prefer the 5X cam, even tho there supposed to be the same. I'm gonna miss the battery tho.

U know the end of your nose and top of your forehead holds the glasses out of the way for the few seconds when u need to see the screen. Life hack!

Not the 1 just the 10

I just received mine yesterday from T-Mobile and it hasn't been that great. I love the size and look of it but I had to factory reset to get the pro mode in the camera to work and to stop this com.tmobile.pr.adapt error from showing up every time I restarted. Wi-Fi performance is very weak. After I did factory reset, I left the phone on the charger on wi-fi to download/install 112 apps and went to bed. When I woke up 5hrs later, only two apps had downloaded and installed. I never had issues with wi-fi in the same spot with my 6P. Guess I'll return it and get the S7 even though I don't really like Touchwiz that much but I want a smaller phone. The 10's camera is okay but not much if at all better than the 6P. The screen doesn't bother me on the 10. If I knew for sure T-Mobile was releasing an update for the phone, I'd ride it out but right now I'm not sure the 10 will get the same amount of updates the S7 has.
