Getting Rid of HTC 10

Re: Return

THIS...Are we still in an age where we are deciding on our phones based on the skin? Come on people, as suggested above, a simple launcher like google now makes your phone look and feel just like a Nexus device.

It depends on what they did to the notification shade.

Samsung released an "Upgrade" to the SystemUI called GoodLock, once you upgrade to it your Notification Shade and Lockscreen gives you the Vanilla Look but with a couple of Customizable and useful settings, so in other words, Nexus look mixed with some TouchWiz functionality. Even the Lockscreen allows for Widgets with it (as far as I know that was removed in Lollipop).

In a summary that "Add-On" has been a very welcomed change from Samsung and the Developer team has been very open to suggestions and has been updating once or twice a month with most of the changes the users have been suggesting and bug reporting.

I got my HTC 10 on the 21th, and was my daily driver until last night, but I'm back to my S7 edge for now with Nova and Good Lock, and believe me, people complaining about the S7 and TouchWiz either don't have it and used it or they are simply repeating the old touchwiz news. I love what HTC did with the 10, I love the build quality and the audio via the Earphones, but for the rest, S7/S7 edge is a better phone. I was missing too many things from my S7 edge for the past 10 days, so, I just went back to it for now and every now and then I'll just switch the Sim card back to the HTC 10 and use it again for a couple of weeks and keep alternating until I move to another phones, but for now, the S7 edge has been the best phone I've ever have, and with this little extra things like the GoodLock app, it's even better now.

I'm kind of back and forth on the camera. I really like the phone. Sense has been pared back to be almost-stock aside from some icons and Blinkfeed, and the Google Now Launcher takes care of most of that on its own. I love everything about it.

The camera is just not quite what HTC made it out to be. My last HTC phone was the One m7 and, to be sure, the camera in the 10 is leaps and bounds better than that. It's also much better than my previous phone, the Droid Turbo. Low light image quality is good, and the exposure in other light seems fine. In fact the image quality isn't really a problem at all.

My complaint is the focus time. My wife has an iPhone 6S Plus (which I would never get for myself), and that phone's camera auto focuses in the blink of an eye. I took it to the Verizon store to see about getting it swapped, but the camera in my phone was basically the same as the one in the display model.

The display model of the S7 was lightning quick to focus when I yanked it around and pointed at different objects. The problem is, the S7 also has TouchWiz. I'm having a hard time deciding if I can live with TouchWiz (and the lack of Adoptable Storage) or if I can live with a slower-to-focus camera. I do have the latest firmware and the latest Camera app update from Google Play, so if it was software, one would think it'd be resolved, right?

Also mixed in with all that is the $35 Verizon will charge me to swap me out within the 14 day return window. I got the One for $550, and the S7 is $672. I'm really pretty sure I'm going to stick with the 10 with all that going against swapping, but I'll forever curse the camera. LOL

It's a launcher out of the question? I hate LG's interface, but Google Now Launcher clears that right up. Icon packs help as well.

I have Nova Prime, which is very customizable. That launcher put the Marshmallow icons on the home screen for me, and it works well. It does seem that a lot of my complaints can be addressed that way.

I'm also concerned about the main storage. I don't want to go back to the old days of manually managing apps and moving them to the SD card - and from what I've read it seems like many apps don't move a whole lot anymore. The 10 has Adoptable storage - which is slower than internal flash, to be sure. About 23GB is free to use out of the box - is that about the same on the Galaxy? It looks like you can manually set up adoptable storage on the S7, which is good. I dunno.

The last part of it is the money, between the $35 swap fee and the slightly higher monthly cost (which neither are deal-breaking—both are cheaper than my wife's 64GB iPhone 6S Plus at nearly $38/mo—but I went with the 10 because it was cheaper to begin with) which has me waffling.

Goodlock is the best thing that happened to the s7. Specially the last update where you can finally change colors. Im very impressed with samsung. Theyre truly listening

Yeah, with latest update now you can add your own Widget to the Lockscreen to replace the original Clock options (No need for any 3rd party lockscreen app just for that), so if you are into designs and use any of the 3rd party Customizable Widget apps, then the possibilities are endless.

Like I said, you can keep repeating the same old Touch Wiz/ Samsung stories and keep finding excuses on why not to get one of their phones, or you can go and do what a lot of switchers have done since S7/S7 edge release and give it a fair try and I assure you that you'll change your mind about the galaxy line.

But being on an HTC 10 forum I think that we shouldn't deviate too much about the topic on hand and give credit where it's due, and HTC has created an excellent phone with a great design and build and insane Sound via earphones, not impressed with the phone speakers or Sense in general as I feel that it lacks a lot on many different things that are more obvious when you have and compare directly with an S7 edge, but in general, in my opinion, is the second best phone currently available.

What is it lacking exactly

If you use or experience in any way the current Touchwiz version you'll know for sure. But just to give you some quick examples;

1-) Quick Settings (incredibly useful for those quick settings tasks)
2-) Limited Quick toggles
3-) No multi-taking or multi-windows options
4-) Vertical Apps drawer scrolling (I know this is personal preference but come on, besides Nexus phones I've had basically all Flagships and some mid range phones out there for the past 4 years and ALL of them use horizontal scrolling not vertical)
5-) S Planner on Galaxies are a great Calendar app and the widgets are even better
6-) Buggy Native Weather App (I haven't been able to even get the Current location weather to work for me where I live, it seems that most if not all people from Puerto Rico are having the same issue).
7-) No native gallery App, sorry but Google Photos is good for backups but not for a Native Gallery App.
8-) Google Play Music player is still too much for us that just need a simple Music Player, Samsung one is simple and great.
9-) No Desktop Grids adjustments, love to use 5x5 on Samsung phones.
10-) No Direct Call, in Samsung phones whenever you have a contact on screen via the Contacts apps or Phone Calls Logs and you bring the device close to your ear it will call that contact.
11-) No Optional Quick Answer or reject by just pressing the icons not swipe needed.
12-) No simple swipes to call or sms, with touchwiz you swipe left to send sms or swipe right to call whenever you have a contact list on screen
13-) No Enhanced Messaging (At least on T-Mobile, I don't know if Verizon added their stuff)
14-) No manual LED disabling - in Touch wiz is as simple as go to Display Settings, in the HTC 10 I needed to download a third party app for that, very annoying during night time or trying to sleep.
15-) When you compares it with the S7 edge, then no Edge functions, great and useful edge features, quick access to contacts, shortcuts available on any screen and a couple of others that I use every time.
16-) Something not specifically related to Sense vs TouchWiz but it must be here also and is NO SAMSUNG PAY.

As you can see, there are a lot of things I can think of, and there are some others more, but I think you have the point already. I know must, if not all, are a matter of personal preferences, but again, you don't know what you are missing until you use them and then move to other devices that doesn't have them. HTC have built their best device ever, but for me is not the best device out there, for me it's a keeper, as I really love it's build and some things here and there, but people saying that Touchwiz means poor performance or lags, it simply means that they really haven't tried latest Samsung flagships, my Note 5 that I used for 5 months never had any issues, my daughter has it now and almost 3 months later it still like the first day I bought it on August. My Wife and other daughter's S7s have been working great since day 1 for almost 3 months now, and my S7 edge is just the same.

Every people needs different things, and there are people that even after using the S7/S7 edge feels that they don't like them and that's all good, there's not a single phone that will be the best phone for every body and that's why Android is so great, so many choices and great options to fit everybody's needs, but I'm just saying that sometimes most of Samsung bashing has been for past experiences and from people not willing to give them another opportunity, take a look at the S7 forum and you will see TONS of other ones that have done it and are saying that Samsung hit it out of the park this time and that they have changed their minds.

So, as you can see, right now I'm a happy camper, I have what I consider the best 2 smartphones right now, but I'm an honest person, I give credits where it's due and critics when I feel I need to, and no, for me Sense is not the best Skin out there and it's lacking in many little things that I consider very important, and once you use them and are used to, it's very hard not to have them. To each it's own, but if it wasn't for Nova I'd returned this phone just days after buying it.

So far, other than look and feel on a couple of apps I am very happy with the phone. I really have no complaints other than Google Play vampirically sucking the life from my battery, and the look of HTC Messenger (I like the old look). Solid phone, great battery life, to me the camera is not important (I have Nikons for photos). There is an intermittent bluetooth glitch with the Plantronics 505 headset though. I really love this phone.

Stick with your 6P. S7 really isn't any better. I tried the S7 Edge and 7 and already had my 6P. Compared both cameras and 9 out of 10 times you couldn't tell which phone took the pic. Returned both of them for many many reasons…including the camera.

6P is still the best phone out there including a very solid camera. That's right…you heard it here...

Naw S7 Edge is the best phone you can buy.

That's very subjective. Just because the S7 edge is best for you does not mean it's best for everyone. In your opinion, the S7 edge is the best phone. In my opinion, the HTC 10 is the best phone you can buy. See how that works?😁

He's been cruising around posting that in an awful lot of threads. Just back away.

Except its not subjective at all. The s7 is touted as the best camera buy just about everyone as well as having the much superior screen and battery life as well as waterproofing. So the fact that you prefer the HTC for whatever reason does not make it the best phone for you, only that you don't care to have the best and are willing to settle for whatever tradeoffs that may be.

I disagree with this completely. Just because a site says something is the best doesn't always mean it is the best for everyone. That is like saying the best car is "X" and if you don't have it you don't have the best .. Yet the person that doesn't want/have that car needs a truck to do their day-to-day tasks.

We all have different needs so saying something isn't the best for someone is kind of a reach since .. You aren't them and don't know their day to day lives :).

You're joking, right? Or just trying to push buttons? According to you, we don't get to formulate our own opinions.

Mods, I'm not poking. I'm asking a serious question. I've been debating whether to do this or not. But I'd really like to know why dannyar11 thinks we should just not think about what we like a just buy what we're told is the best. I'd would love to understand the logic.

Wait wait... He actually has invaluable knowledge and experience that is useful here. He's managed to use 3 other devices in addition to the HTC 10 over the course of 4 consecutive days for 6 days. If he says that the S7 is the best, then I think he's the most qualified to state such since he's had over 600 hours of hands on time with the HTC 10 and 900 total hours with other flagships from Apple, Samsung, and LG. Objectivity isn't needed in this case when there's a sufficient amount of unbiased experiences that can be used for justification.

I think Samsung went backwards on the S7 camera. I have used both and think the image quality from the S6 camera is better.

Same as the HTC 10, is one of the best phones you can buy.

This. Everything is subjective. Yes, Samsung has some of the best hardware, but personally I'm not a fan of Touchwiz and Samsung phones are some of the slowest to get Android updates. Not saying this is going to be a problem with this year's Samsung models, but about everyone I know that has had a Samsung phone in the past hated them after 6 months because updates made them laggy.
