OK I'm sick of the reboots but occasionally need my mobile hotspot (that's why I haven't done the update) so I'm going to root. I read that I shouldn't root if I have the updated gingerbread. Here it comes... Where do I find out which version of gingerbread I have.

You should check in settings , about phone, software version. Did you manually load the gingerbread leak? You shouldn't be having random reboots unless you are on the MR1 update to froyo. If you're Android version is 2.3.3, your still running froyo.

You should re read that. Android 2.2.1 is Froyo on the Thunderbolt. Android 2.3.4 is the Gingerbread version.

You don't need to root just update to the 2.10 RUU and your hotspot should be working from what everyone is saying.

Anyone confirm this for him?

My mistake, for what its worth , 2.11 hotspot is not working for free either.

The MHS will not work for free on any post-MR2 builds that I have seen. However, whether it is just plain working or not, I have had no issues.

Also, I would recommend the 2.07 build if you update to GB. It seems to have the best radio build, and from what I see, there are only minor enhancements to the 2.10/2.11 versions, and the radios are not as stable.

Well S.O.B. I had free hot spot until this afternoon. I still have 2.2.1 but it upoaded a hotspot widget

You were probably force updated while your phone was on standby if you hadn't already installed the MR2 update.

Can I root now with the update using the Revolutionary method.
Is there a way to still tether out there. I don't want to subscribe for 1 or 2 times a month when I need a hotspot.

You can still root the old fashioned way, you don't have Gingerbread yet and from what i've read once you're rooted there are tether apps you can use.
