Yes Gingersnap will definitely work for you. I also encourage you to try out the newer Sons of Korhal utility (assuming you are on Windows).

I want root my phone with ZVC firmware. I followed the following steps:

1) You need the .NET 4 Framework. Not the Client Profile, the full .NET 4 Framework.
2) For some reason you need the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable installed. Don't ask me why.
3) You need proper drivers for your device. Your video card doesn't work without drivers and neither will your phone.
4) Your device needs to have USB debugging enabled.
5) Gingersnap should be used ONLY on a fresh reboot of your device. If you don't know what this means, reboot your phone before using this utility

but I got stuck at this point:

E:\My Documents\My Downloads\Optimus S root\GingersnapRootUtilityForWindows\Gingersnap>
adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
$ su
su
su: permission denied

What I am doing wrong?

adb shell opens a command prompt on your phone. you are not yet rooted, so you can't su.

I did mine the manual way so i can't say this with 100% confidence, but once you have the shell, i assume you run gingersnap at this point to get root access. I'm not sure if this does the custom recovery or not, read other threads which have the steps of backing up your system installing custom recoveries and then custom roms.

On your phone, you need to accept the superuser permissions.

Alright, I've tried a dozen times using Gingersnap and SuperOneClick.

I've downloaded the .NET 4 and C++ thing, and definitively have the proper driver installed. I've also disabled the driver signing thing at bootup because I'm on Win7 Home Premium 64. Debugging is on, mass storage is off. I'm leaving the phone unlocked with the screen on.

Each time I try, it gets stuck at the exploit part. It stays there forever (I've waited up to 30 mins), so I close and restart it, then it takes less than 10 seconds to complete and restart my phone. After that, no Superuser app. That happens each time.

What baseband are you on?

Edit: I just used the Sons of Korhal utility, worked first try in seconds.

Gingersnap + SVD + Mac 10.6 = Success!

Now for my question.

1. What kind of app should I use to restrict SU access?

It seems SuperUser Whitelist is outdated

Downloaded the Gingersnap from the first page, debugging id on, utility runs and claims to have rooted. I am trying to install the reborn ROM but I can not seem to find where my phone has been rooted by Gingersnap. All the files and info on my phones SD card are the same no changes at all. Is there some hidden folder or file I am not seeing, or did it just fail to work. I have done this a couple of times now and gotten nowhere, as a Noob I am sure it is just me doing something wrong, please help, I am lost here.:(

I need very basic instructions. if you are reading this and can help i would be grateful. I have an lg optimus 2. i rooted it with ginger snap. there is some type of custom recovery I need called xiona, i want hotspot capability without usb. i have no idea how to do this, i have downloaded two files to my pc, flash image and xiona rar file. i am unable to figure out how to see my sd card on my pc. i toggle the USB debugging on and off and that makes the difference between my computer seeing the phone, the folders that show up are android, android_secure and lost.dir. is my sd card buried in one of these files? your detailed advice is appreciated as i am a baby android user.

Oye... This is why I do not recommend one-clicks to first-time rooters; they allow people to remain ignorant of what they just did.

Rooting and, therefore, this utility do not put any bunnies or magic castles on your SD card. It simply runs an exploit that allows you to gain access to the rest of the file system that is above the home /sdcard directory and manipulate it when desired. It installs 2 files on your device, busybox and Superuser.apk.

They only difference you would be able to see in your interface is that there is an icon for the Superuser app in your app drawer.

Download an app that requires root access and use it. See if it prompts you for SU or not?
