Global Phone?

It WILL be official sooner or later. VZW stated that something like 3-4 of there phones will get an update sometime to make it a global phone.

The kicker is that it will be like hotspot. You will have to pay for the privilege. The recourse is like hotspot, I am sure that the devs will find a way to make it permanent and skirt the payment part.

If Rezound gets unlocked, enabling the GSM radio, it should be like any other unlocked world phone, isn't it? I had my old BB unlocked, bought a third party global SIM, and used it overseas in April for calls and texts. No data, though.

Verizon is going to make it so you have to pay them a fee to make it a world phone.

As of right now, the devs over at XDA have everything working (without VZWs help) with the exception of SMS I believe (don't quote me on that).

When VZW adds the code into the phone, and the devs get it then yes, it should be like any other...

What is the reason to think that there will be some special VZW fee? I didn't have to pay any fee when my BB was unlocked.

Unless they're going to charge you for a software update, I don't think they'll charge a new fee.

So long as voice/data works, you can instead use a google voice number to receive text messages as that relies on data.

I don't think that there is a special fee at all, unless of course you use verizon sim abroad (why would you)?

It would be nice to get official gsm support, I hope that they don't somehow block out att and tmo though.

Recent history suggests they would block access to AT&T and T-Mobile.

But I am assuming that the block can be unblocked though perhaps requires root considering that you can use the rezound as is on tmo or att right now even without root.

I totally stand corrected on the fee. I either read it wrong or misunderstood.

Of course they are going to try to lock out att but they will fail

Can it? I might have missed it, but I don't think it was ever unblocked on phones like the DROID 2, DROID 3, DROID Pro, and HTC Merge.

Well, the current stock rezound can do it and I am sure that some ROM's can do it too. Hopefully you can undo whatever damage verizon does, especially since we have s-off

I'm not sure this is the perfect thread for this question but I was hesitant to start a new one for a similar topic.

I travel to Vancouver BC semi regularly and VZW's data plans for Canada are outrageous. I was curious if i was to get a prepaid sim for a CDMA Canadian carrier if i would be able to use the full features of the phone or if other steps would be required. Thanks

You would need a gsm carrier, and then just pop in the sim. CDMA carriers generally require the imei to be in their system.

Even though I was resolutely told by VZW Global before my departure for Europe last month that my Rezound won't work overseas, I used it to make several calls and exchanged some texts. Upon return, my first bill showed over $100 in roaming charges. I called Verizon and asked them how could I've incurred these charges if Rezound didn't work on a GSM network. After some arguing back and forth, they agreed to remove all roaming charges. Interestingly, some of the calls in my phone call history matched my Verizon statement and some not at all. There was no way to try to match texts.

Any reason why you didn't buy a pre-paid SIM for your Rezound?
