Gmail app won't open ".ics" attachments

All of a sudden (within the past couple of weeks) my Gmail app is unable to download/open iCal attachments. The pop-up window starts at 0% and just stays there. I've tried force stopping the app, clearing the cache, restating the phone, etc. Does anyone know if there is a reason behind this? Are you experiencing the same issue? In case it's relevant I'm on Project Fi using a Pixel XL updated with the February security patch. Thank you in advance for your comments!
