Gmail - disable/remove floating reply bar?

When I use the new Gmail app in landscape mode on my Droid X, I find that the viewable height between the floating reply bar and the archive-delete-<-> bar is much smaller than I prefer. Particularly when viewing emails containing images (its like peeking through a letterslot). Is there any way to disable or remove the floating reply bar to return its behavior to more like it was in the prior version of Gmail? I've searched the phone and several forums and haven't seen this issue addressed anywhere.

I was wondering the same thing and arrived at your post after some extensive googling. I think that it should definitely be an option. Dear google, please give the users the option to auto hide this bar, and the one at the bottom as well.
