Exactly. It's the HTC e-mail app (the one that by default has the nice home screen widget) that doesn't do gmail. But the phone absolutely has a gmail app. Same as any other Android phone.

so the HTC email app with the home screen widget, if i have yahoo, hotmail and gmail am i understanding that in order for the gmail to be in this app, it needs to be set-up as exchange? also, if i do this, will all yahoo, hotmail, and gmail be pushed or pulled to the device from this widget?

it's not sense that changes it. it's the way android is designed. gmail always has its own app.

Okay, so lets get this straight, I can set up as many emails (yahoo, work, rcn, ect.) under the HTC email app which appears in one mail folder but gmail has to be set up as an exchange account to do this. Otherwise, it goes into another folder/gmail application. I am coming from a blackberry. With the bb all my emails appear in one blackberry email application folder. They are also sorted separately in another folder that I can access also.

While we are on the subject, can sms's be viewed or stored in the email folder also?

^^ i think you have this right, and i believe SMS's are seperate, but confirmation on this would be appreciated. i'm coming from a BB as well.

the unified messages box of blackberry is not part of the android platform.

however, the notification system on android is SO SO SO much better than on blackberry that this really isn't the issue it seems like it is.

I made the mistake of setting up Gmail in both the pre-installed Gmail app and the Mail app. I found that I don't need it in the Mail app, the GMail app does just fine.

Can you explain what is SO much better? I'm in a similar position, switching from Blackberry shortly, and deciding whether to go Android or iPhone4. I have Exchange (work), Yahoo, and multiple Gmail/GoogleApps accounts. As far as I can tell, having all those accounts on the phone may end up being a bit of a headache to manage. My understanding is that I will need:

1) Use Gmail App for my Gmail/GoogleApps accounts
2) Use HTC email app for Exchange/Yahoo accounts (limited to 1 Exchange account)

So at a minimum, I have at least two email apps to check. Also, within these apps, it seems like I can only see one of those accounts at a time, and I need to manually switch between accounts? This does sound like a bit of a headache. I definitely like the single unified inbox concept that BB has (and, also an optional per-account view). It shouldn't be a big hassle to check for new mail messages (open multiple apps, switch between accounts, etc.). Right now on my BB it's one button press to see all my messages.

Also, I saw some mention of limitations around selecting which email account to send new messages FROM. Is it possible/easy to select which account I'm sending a new email message from?

I'm liking the looks of the Android platform, but iPhone4 with multiple exchange accounts and unified inbox will definitely do what I want. The core functionality has to be there first and foremost...

It's actually pretty simple really. I have gmail poll all my pop3 accounts from various sources and have them label from which account they come from. If you auth the account inside gmail when you reply to email that come from those accounts, it responds under that email addy not your gmail addy.

One mailbox, pushed to the phone, done.

OK, so set up GMail on the server to poll the other accounts via POP3 (and label), then access everything via the Gmail Client. I assume Exchange is still a separate app then?

How about sending email? Is it possible to send an email FROM an account that is polled (i.e. using Gmail, polling my Yahoo account, send a new email *FROM* my yahoo account)?

Yes, there is a write up about it floating around somewhere, but basically inside your gmail settings, "Accounts and Import", you need to verfy you own the account. From that point on it will respond under your alternate pop3 account credentials instead of your gmail account.

For instance you account with gmail is me@gmail.com.
You have it polling from me@mysite.net.

When gmail retrieves it it will put a label on it.
You respond to your friend who emailed you at me@mysite.net
Gmail sends the email out as me@mysite.net not me@gmail.com

Hope that makes sense. Just add your account, follow the steps. Then once added you will see your other account and "respond as" settings one of the options is, "Reply from the same address the message was sent to
". Setup how you like it and you're done.

Yup, makes perfect sense, and seems workable in general.

But how about sending a new message (not a reply) from the alternate POP account? Is this possible?

Also, if I have multiple Google accounts configured (i.e. GMail + Google Apps accounts), do I see all those accounts in a single inbox in the GMail app? Or do I need to manually switch between the accounts, and can only see one at a time?

I haven't found a way to create a new mail from those accounts, that's the only drawback. For me though I only respond to people at my alternate addresses. So there may be a way but I'm unaware of it.

As far as multiple accounts I'm not sure, I only run one gmail account. So maybe someone will pipe in with that information. Good luck!

From the sound of things I believe the Pre while not perfect does handle email pretty well. You can have as many gmail or other email addresses as you want and they all open in one place under All Mail but then you can access the account inboxes and folders seperately as well.

For most people though like my gf who has the Inc she's just using one gmail account to manage everything so she's loving the stock gmail app. I simply helped her remove the HTC email widget and app short cut from her home screens and added the gmail app and she's set.
