Gmail Sync Problems

I am having problems with Gmail not syncing correctly. Sometimes I want get a notification at all. I have to manual refresh inside the Gmail app for my emails to come in. I am running stock froyo. I have already clear data. I need help. I need my emails to come on time. Any ideas?
