I am confused by trying to figure out the difference between Mail and the GMail application.

Configuration under accounts:
Google: Sync's everything (see note below).
Gmail: Yes - sync

So I have it setup twice under accounts. I had the Google gmail sync turned off for a while. I haven't been able to tell the difference.

The notification bar shows mail with the Gmail icon. When I open it via notification I think it is taking me into the generic mail tool and it shows all my emails even if they were deleted off of my gmail account that day.

I added the Gmail app to my home screen and removed the generic Mail icon. This seems to work.

So what I want to accomplish is:
1) Have one email tool that is pulled up from notification and home screen.
2) When I delete an email in the gmail app I want it to delete it from my actual gmail account - it doesn't seem to
3) Is there a way for the gmail app to let me move emails to folders in my gmail account?

Thanks for any help.

Do you have GMail setup as POP or IMAP in regular mail? I don't quite get the point of this experiment but the gmail app should do everything you're looking to accomplish for anything gmail. If you want gmail like "syncing" with a non-GMail account then use IMAP becuase IMAP doesn't cache your mail, it reads directly from the server. Try reading this: Official Gmail Blog

Yes sign out of the mail app unless you have addresses other than Gmail that your using with it. The Gmail app is by far superior. All that sufficient you want to do is possible within the Gmail app just dig into the settings and read.
