Going to iPhone6?

Going back to the topic, while I feel the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus look to be stellar devices, I probably won't get one.

If the iPhone 6 ran Android, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The camera looks great, performance looks good, battery seems ok. Just looks like an overall really solid device.

While iOS has some really neat tricks and is a great OS, I still prefer Android overall. If you could flash Android to it, I'd probably get it. However I'd want the iPhone's camera software.

That's one thing I've always liked about the iPhones. Somehow they just make outstanding cameras. Not sure if it's the hardware or software or a combination of both, but they just do it really well.

In terms of their new features, Apple's just catching up to what Android and Samsung already have. :-$

As a guy who ordered an iPhone 6 I will completely admit that Apple is playing catchup to most Android devices when it comes to features. My old S4, my Moto X, and my Nexus 7 all had features that were above and beyond what was available on the equivalent Apple device. What I've come to realize is that I'd rather have a device that does what I need it to really well rather than a device that does what I need it to most of the time (and quirks out some of the time, or is pending a fix for 6+ months, etc) and then a bunch of both stuff that are nice to haves or that I really don't use.

Yes, I realize I am trading my Android device for one with less functionality. Functionality isn't everything.

Thanks for that feedback, bearda. I know it's not as simple as, "Android already did that." Apple does have a slick user experience. I'm just critiquing the buzz around the 6 and 6+. which I find to be a little overzealous.

I think Apple's M.O. now is to let other platforms like Android experiment with new features before they pick them up, so they can learn from their mistakes.

Most all of these phones are not designed for that sort of thing... GG3... it is designed, first and foremost, to resist scratching, then Corning played around with some stuff in an attempt to mitigate microscopic cracks from propagating and turning your screen into a spider web. But glass is still glass and doesn't take kindly to hard impacts, like dropping it on to concrete from 6 feet.

And sapphire? Look the Kyocera Brigadier and its sapphire screen. Indestructible! Well, not so fast. The chassis on that thing is built up like an M1 tank, including shock-absorbing bumpers and prominent bezels that help avoid anything from cranking on the screen too hard (say, in a DROP TEST). So even though sapphire screens will have incredible scratch resistance, they are also very shatter-prone. And unlike an engineered product like Gorilla Glass, sapphire is what it is and will always be that way. So if someone were to put a sapphire screen in a form factor that would pretty much leave it with no protection... say the iPhone 6.... drop tests, on the whole, will not be pretty.

Apple dropped a pile of cash into sapphire tech and it never made it into the 6. My money is on the fact that they realized, among other issues, that if they slapped a thin sheet of that stuff in a really tight aluminum chassis (i.e. zero shock protection)? Well, everyone would be admiring how resistant their new iPhones were to scratches.... if they could only tell through all the cracks. But..... it'll be awesome for, say, a watch face.

So.... in conclusion... Let's all chill with all the drop test stuff... because unless we all want our phones to look like the Brigadier or an S5 in an Otterbox, it'll most likely break if you toss the thing on to the pavement.

Though, it is kind of fun to watch a dude trash a new iPhone 6 while there are still people in line waiting to get their hands on one for the first time. So that part is cool..... :)

I think this time they did good. I like iphone6 but i dont think going to 6. Android is the best!

Are many, if any flagships? I can't think of many phones that would consistently survive a drop like that. Also, check out the Android Authority drop tests. I'd say they ARE pretty durable.

Best thing to do is to not drop it :P

My iPhone 4 was the best lol. It survived 6-7 foot drops to concrete, hail storms, even throwing a bag which had my phone in it and all it had was a gouge on the bottom left of the phone left of the home button. Screen and back was spotless

That's pure luck :p
If it were to have hit on the side of the glass it would have shattered. My guess is it hit the metal band instead of that.

I too had a lot of luck with my iPhone 4S, it had so many scratches from falls but no cracks. Same thing as my Nexus 4. Holes in the plastic of my phone but nothing to my screen or back.

Lol, off topic, but my friend SAT on his Nexus 4 within a week of getting it...and completely smashed the back glass I've been put off glass backs ever since!

Still, phone durability doesn't matter too much to me when the likelihood of it being damaged in a fall is purely down to luck. You could drop one of the strongest Android flagships, or an iPhone etc. once in the wrong way, and you've got a broken phone. Then again, you can drop a fairly weak phone many times and be lucky enough to have it land in ways which don't break it.

I myself am twisted between Note Edge and iPhone 6 Plus. I hope Sammy brings Edge to market soon. But agree that 6 plus has less features than Note 4/Edge

While I agree...apple products do look good and app support is better. I personally like iTunes since it makes it easy. On pure specs note 4/edge wins but ios doesn't need the specs to work great.

Yeah. The S5 did very well last generation. It's also completely waterproof. The Moto G and X are also "unofficially" waterproof, though they can survive complete submersion intact.

From what I've seen, they also break when you drop them. Just like an iPhone. Better buy a case!

Waterproofing, intentional or not, is nice. But I've never got my phone wet, or seen the need. And I never have it out where there's a danger of it getting wet.
