I hate to carrier bash but there's a reason why T Mobile has the statistically known worst coverage in america. I don't care where you are or how much you claim you usually get good service in your area, its still T mobile. The N1 may have higher specs but there's a reason why Android websites and bloggers still view the Droid as the dominant device. Yes sales have something to do with it, but again, that ties in with the carrier. More people are on Verizon because of the service...less people are on T mobile because of its service. I'm sorry your Android experience was ruined because of a pathetic carrier but...I guess it is what it is.

No, you missed his point entirely. On the same T-Mobile, a different phone got good service and all emails. Only his N1 did not.

We all got it.....HTC does not make that great of a phone to start with. They make "pretty" phones but that's about it. Battery life is always bad, earpiece and speaker sounds are always muffled...etc..

I just got mine yesterday and I do not see the same 3G issues that's mentioned or is in that video in the first post. Currently sitting at my desk my 3G signal is -73 20 asu (whatever the asu means) then placing it in my hand at various positions changes the signal to -83 and 13 asu. I can clutch it with both hands tightly and get it down to -93, but still see 3 bars so its staying 3G for me no matter what.

I'm in Atlanta and the building i'm sitting in happens to be an ATT(Cingular) corporate office so take it for what you want. I'll try again when I get home (boonies) to see if there is any difference.

The AT&T version does not suffer from the same issue some with T-Mobile have seen regarding the 3G signal.

if there is truth though, wondering if due to the 850mhz better penetration... areas with 1900 at&t only might have similar issues to T-Mo I would think... unless the AT&T has a newer firmware that we T-Mo N1 users haven't gotten yet???

I've owned Android, Apple, and BlackBerry devices ..

Email was best on the BlackBerry, followed closely by the iPhone, and far into last place was Android.

Constantly had problems with my Droid.. getting the same emails after I had deleted them, not getting emails, not sending emails properly, etc...

That could very well be the reason. 850mhz = very good for penetration. AT&T is only putting their 3G on 850 now, switching the 1900mhz 3G to 850mhz, that will be an issue AT&T won't really face, if at all unlike T-mobile. They only have 1700mhz for 3G.

From what I've read, yes.

Your question asks about a "google account". I don't know what a google account is. Did you mean a gmail account? If so, then yes. You do need a gmail account for the device to work properly. All the helpful verizon guy will do is associate the device with a gmail account.

by the way, you need at least one gmail account to sync your contacts.

The potential problem is that whatever account is first set up is basically stuck as the primary account (for the naive IM app, the account in market where you buy apps, the latitude account in maps, and a few other places). It CAN be changed in the future, but that requires a total factory wipe.

So, the advice is to make sure that when the device is set up (by you or the verizon store rep) just put thought into what gmail account you're using.

But, in short, YES, you do NEED a gmail account.

I feel the opposite... Email is #1 with the iPhone for me, BB coming in a far 2nd. Aside from not being able to set up aliases, IMAP, real HTML and no truncation of emails is something the "king of bb" has yet to attempt to compete with.

Push... how many people actually "need" it vs. "15 minute checks". Even though I say that, the three emails I have set up on my iPhone (gmail, mobileme & yahoo) are all pushed and I get them faster on my iPhone majority of the time.

agreed... for non BES users, BB sucks balls.... iphone by FAR the best out of the box integration with Exchange/Outlooks (both email AND calendar)... without the need for an expensive BES server and license....

So true... plus the $15 you save per month instead of getting the "Enterprise" package which honestly is BS and should all be $30 IMO.
