Goodbye to my Bionic

Ry...Sam...howcum we're still hangin' around hereabouts, huh??!?

Hard to get away from that OMAP experience, ain't it?

Well, Sam's got an excuse...sorta...HoB and all.

My Bionic + Lapdock has turned into my 10" Wi-Fi Android laptop. :D

But updates don't matter as much to me (and most regular users). :)\

Plus none of those devices were Nexus devices.

That's good cause they ain't getting any apparently. LOL! :) Samsung is moving directly from 4.1.2 to 4.3 on the S3...a phone that's technically older than the HD and M and got 4.1.2 a full 4 months before them. We're talking VZW S3 here, to make it a fair comparison. Maybe Moto plans on skipping 4.2.2 on the HD and M, too, but, I seriously doubt it.

I *REALLY* hate the "most users don't care" attitude. Maybe they don't. But they should. Updates bring security fixes. You know, those things that keep malware off your phone? It's all well and good to say "I don't care about new features". Fine. But "I don't care about updates" is ridiculous. Do you skip windows/linux/mac updates each month cause you don't care? :) And yes, malware is a HUGE problem for Android right now. Google has done a LOT of work with the 4.x releases to increase security. SELinux now being a reality on many devices now, as an example. But if devices aren't getting timely updates, they're at risk of being infected with some really nasty crap. And yes, some of it has been found on the google play store, so, saying "I only install apps from..." isn't a valid security measure anymore. Browsers are another attack vector. People need to know what they're up against cause it's getting worse and worse. Running old versions puts you at greater risk IMO.

This is also why I applaud CM's business plan to bring CM to more devices. They keep their stuff updated quite well. That's what Android needs more of. If the carrier and mfg aren't going to put any effort into keeping your OS updated against known security threats (and btw, every root exploit is a security threat....just an FYI), then unlock the damn device and let someone else do it.

HoB is retired. I replaced it with the HoM so that ALL moto phones that have an FXZ can use the magical scripting capabilities. :) And I'm on many parts of this forum. :) Lately I've been hanging out in the S4 GPE section.

Give me the security update as a patch. I really don't care about the features. My phone works.

It's probably going to take a major outbreak for the OEMs and carriers to put the effort you want. And still - it should be about security, not Android/Google/Nexus features.

Sadly, CM won't get anywhere - they're still going to be irrelevant to the general consumer.

And yes. Every root exploit is essentially a security threat - which is why I don't root. :)

I take it you're not up on Google Play Services? New features aren't really OS update limited now. New features and functionality are pushed through the GPS. And I mean PUSHED as in you don't even get control. It just happens. The OS updates are now relegated to security and framework updates. More about the guts of the OS than the pomp and circumstance and flashy stuff. So that's happening. But what's not happening is the OS updates getting to enough phones. And you're right, it'll take a MAJOR issue for the carriers and MFG's to wake up. If I still owned a carrier branded phone I'd sue them if I got hit with a virus caused by having an outdated OS version on my phone. That's what it'll take. Or, like me, abandon the carrier branded crap. And no, I'm not talking about Nexus.

Um, you didn't just say that about root? sigh. :) Whether you root or not doesn't change the fact that the SECURITY HOLE that ALLOWS FOR root exists either way. Malware can use it just as easily as root exploits can. So your decision to root...or not....doesn't make you safer. I'd argue that it doesn't make you safe at all as you clearly have a false sense of security. LMAO! :D ;)

I'm very much up on Google Play Services. Couple that with the fact that Google is putting pieces of Google services in the Play Store means it doesn't matter if my phone is running 4.2.2. or 4.3 to get a new feature on a Google app.

Oh and if you sued an OEM or carrier because a virus got on your phone, I'm pretty sure there are terms in the user agreement that would protect them. If there weren't, Microsoft wouldn't be in business.

We agree that it's going to take something major (high-profile exploit, virus) for everyone, Google included, to push updates to every device running Android. The difference is I'm not worrying about it at the level you're worrying about it. We're always going to disagree on how important Android updates are.

A great defense against malware is common sense. While I rely on the Play Store to get apps, I'm not downloading something like "Super Bikini Wallpaper Boom-Boom Room (Live Edition)" from the Play Store.

Am I safer for not rooting? Of course not.

If someone wanted to do something nefarious to my device, they'll find a way in regardless of if I'm on the latest version of Android or not.

Oh crap..uninstall, UNINSTALL! Damn super bikinis get me every time! LMAO! No I get your point. I'm mostly just giving you a hard time. You know me. :D I agree that suing would likely get me nowhere, but, there's no other way to make it a priority for them. Well, there is, but, it would SUCK for everyone, not just them. That is if their network was compromised due to an infected phone. You'd never see an update so fast in your life as when a phone affects the stability of their network or worse their ability to charge you for the privilege of using said network. Imagine a virus that gave people unlimited data, for example. I'd be willing to be an update for your phone would be out in less than a month if that were to happen. But if it affects only the user? Not a chance. These carriers only understand one thing....$$$$ And if it's not affecting their bottom line negatively, they don't care. They don't want to deal with updates. That costs them money to test it, roll it out, train up the techs, etc. And makes it more likely that you might hold on to your phone a bit longer, which costs them money again in lost new phone sales. I got out of the whole carrier game for this very reason. I want them to provide me service. That's it. You don't see comcast telling you what OS you can have on your computer in order to get internet service from them, do you? Why should carriers be allowed to tell me what I can and can't have on my phone or tablet? No I'm done with that. I've gone month to month so I can switch at any point in time, and I bought my device at retail so I can switch that at any time, as well. And since the carrier doesn't control it, I can put whatever I want on that device. That's how it should be. The zombies among us can continue to fork over 24 month contract $$$$ to get their subsidized, locked down, bloated phones. I'm good with that. Just as long as they understand the grand bargain in that scenario.

Could not find that one, could you please provide a link???

As long as Motorola exists, I'm probably gonna have a Motorola as a daily driver. http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...203-post-your-phone-timeline.html#post1861526

They've lost me for the foreseeable future. They will have a lot of growing to do to win me back. The X and latest droids ain't gonna do it for me. I'm extremely happy with my s4 gpe.

Sorry about the earlier joke, just couldn't pass it up.

Saying that, my big gripe with the new Motorola's are the lack of an SD slot. I don't care what others think, but until the base phone has at least 128GB flash free, I will require a SD slot of some kind for devices I carry around.

I would not need a SD slot for single use devices (like using it to just play music, while on a WiFi at home.). Yes, some tablets are cheap enough to be used that way. Heck for that, I wouldn't even need a dual core CPU!

Yes, I wish they would unlock the boot loaders, at least after you are off contract, but as long as I'm stuck with Verizon (and because of coverage, I am) they are the ones requiring locked boot loaders, not the phone makers.

You have the option of forgoing contracts and buying a dev edition device at retail. That gives you the most options.

Yes, and I am serious conceding that. Hate to pay that much, but it sure fixes any OS issues! (currently leaning about 90 for, 10 against.)

I am going to try and put the Carbon ROMs on my phone and TF201 first, and see if I can get another 6-9 months out of them first. (that seems to be the only set of CM10.2's I can find) First thing I did with the TF201 was unlock the bootloader!

If you're going to do it, make SURE the Dev Edition you get is supported by the community. If you don't, you could end up with an S4 DE which is absolutely HORRIBLE. The VZW retail S4 has received 2 updates so far. The DE hasn't even received ONE. Unlockable doesn't automatically equal rom heaven. Do your homework.

I understand. I really get confused by people that buy stuff, then complain that it is missing a function, when ANY research would have told them otherwise. BTW, saw were the unlocked S4 got the first 4.3 update. When I bought my Bionic, I thought updates would flow like the Windows ones do. Now, before I would even look at a phone, I'd review the companies history on updates. So far, it looks like they all suck! (I'm not counting only Android phones in this case!)

(Example "I" know about: The Silicon Dust HDHomerun can only handle digital transmissions, yet people on Newegg and Amazon both complain about it not working with analog. A 2 minute search would have told them that!!! I kind of expect that from Amazon shoppers, but always thought Newegg shoppers had 1/2 a brain!)
