Forgive me if these questions are ridiculous to some, but I am having a little trouble grasping some of the basic elements of my new phone. I should probably preface these questions with a brief background on myself as a user though. I pretty much had been using an awfully insufficient Droid X for the last couple years. I disliked that phone so much that I thought I would upgrade to the most robust device I could, which happened to be the Note 3. Apparently a lot has changed; I am also looking to extract more functionality out of my phone so I will need to understand the technology at a deeper level than I did on old one. Please speak to me like you would if I were a small child, or a dog.
That said, here is where I need a kind of an explanation of the relationship between Google and Syncing.
1. Google:
a) What is the deal with "Google location" vs regular location services? In particular, I don't really want anyone to know my location unless I have actually enabled the GPS to temporary make use of the feature (like when I need directions from my current location, I would toggle GPS to On>Open up maps>get directions>depart>arrive>toggle GPS to Off) I don't want to share my precise location with Google or any other app that decided they "needed" that permission UNLESS I am actively, manually able to control when I make that available.
b) Why do I need to have my gmail account linked to every damn app of theirs? I don't want my gmail account being used in youtube. I don't want my device calender to be copied to my gmail calender(non existent). I don't want my E-mail (MS Exchange email for work) contacts to "sync" or whatever to my gmail contacts or vice versa... Not only do I not have a good grasp on how to make this stuff (not)happen, I don't even understand what it all means..
2. Which brings me to "sync."
a) What is sync? From my previous understanding, sync meant: "I have 3 e-mails in my gmail account. But now I can view them directly through a gmail app on my phone because that app has synced with google's servers. Also, now I can compose and e-mail from that app and send it out--later when I check sent from gmail's web based interface, that e-mail (composed and sent from my device) will be there. Obviously, it is not that simple I guess.
b) What the hell is push? I thought push meant that the new e-mail that lands in my work e-mail's inbox will be forwarded instantly to my device. Contrast that with sync, where at regular intervals my device checks a server for anything new (like an e-mail), and upon finding something, will forward it to my device so I can access it directly... If that is the case, what is the advantages and disadvantages on each. And why do somethings require sync? or have sync but no push options, etc.?
3) One last thing: WTF happened to the google search bar/widget that I could type directly into from home screen and it would bring up the search results in my browser directly? Now it seems like it contains all those results within itself, and each time I select one it then opens it up in a browser... which seems unnecessary and redundant. Not to mention the stupid "ok google" voice activated search that wants more and more of my information in exchange for something that offers me no utility... "Ok Google, give me back my regular search bar from 2 years ago, along with a sense or semblance of privacy and anonymity."
If anyone can answer or enlighten me, I would appreciate it. Also feel free to berate me about how I am being stupid or lazy or whatever. Seriously don't hold back, I probably deserve it.
Thanks in advance and sorry for this rambling incoherent line of questioning, as well as my complete lack of an adequate frame of reference.
Regards,
Pat
PS: What is up with a good case? I was looking for those glass screen protectors but no one at Tmobile/ATT/Verizon stores even had any idea what I was talking about... Ah nevermind this might be for another discussion
