Google bans Huawei:Are you worried?

Whether you are anti-China/Huawei or not, the inevitable outcome is that consumers are largely going to be the ones paying the price. It’s a shame, because Huawei does make excellent phones and products at a reasonable price.

I wouldn’t blame Google, Intel, Qualcomm etc...they’re just complying with the law, because it’s the law ._.

But I do think this anti-China/Huawei hysteria by the US and the West is rather far-fetched...NO conclusive or damning evidence has been given so far. While there are legitimate concerns about Huawei 5G tech and its potential to resist or be used by the Chinese Government, Huawei phones are no threat. Seriously, Huawei doesn’t have the capacity to strictly monitor all of their millions of sold devices. The majority of this stuff is hysteria and speculation in my humble opinion.

Many saw this coming...Huawei already said it had a back up OS ready in case of this. Huawei was doing extremely well too...it had overtaken Apple (thankfully) and was racing with Samsung for top spot...no doubt both of them will be happy as the Android ban will certainly reduce sales of Huawei tech. But it does raise the question of the US weaponising its exports and sacrificing consumers just to prove a point to nations it has fallen out with.

Clarification: Current Huawei devices will still be able to run normally, have access to the Play Store, Google apps etc. It’s just that they won’t receive any more updates and future Huawei devices will not run Android, have Google apps, the Play Store etc.

This whole story isn’t a very positive one, at least not for consumers and Huawei :(

I agree with this in terms of the espionage claims. The fact that it is true that, IF the Chinese government were to request a back door would mean that Huawei would have to implement one, is not the same thing as evidence that the Chinese government DID request a back door and that Huawei complied. On the trading with Iran claims, the evidence that's available seems fairly solid that there was definitely a conspiracy to fraudulently hide transactions under a subsidy in order to bypass sanctions on trading with Iran.

Re: Huawei has immediately lost access to Android and Google

My friend’s Mate 20 just had gmail, maps and Google Assistant disabled

Where? What carrier? It's still working here in Canada on Bell network.

I would cancel the order or return it once you get it because this is a massive blow to Huawei. I wouldn't take the chance on getting Huawei phones, just not worth it now.

Now? No.

But maybe in a couple of years Huawei’s OS and App Store will be as advanced as iOS and Android...they already have one prepared for this scenario. I wouldn’t underestimate Huawei’s ability to adapt. Remember, years ago when Android first came out, everyone said it wouldn’t be able to compete against iOS. And now look where we are :)

Good point. I’m sure the Iran fraudulent hiding trade affair (I’m not justifying it) was only a reason to use on paper. The behind-the-scenes reasons probably include countless more (e.g Huawei is surpassing US companies etc), but whether you believe that or not depends on your opinion.

It shouldn’t have been disabled automatically. Current Huawei devices will still be able to use Android, Google etc. It only affects updates and future Huawei devices.

I think Amazon still has an app store as well, and Huawei's Android still allows for other third party stores.

I doubt that will be enough to truly replace the gargantuan scale of Android. Huawei will most likely copy most features of Android (I wouldn’t blame them) and as for their App Store they could just encourage/make the top 100 apps for every category to start with.

To clarify the situation, Huawei has no restrictions on using Android, they just won't be able to use Google Play Services, etc. Similar to FireOS or whatever Amazon calls their fork of Android they use on Kindles, etc.

I wonder what the long-term implications of this will be. I wonder if we are heading toward a less globalised world. Surely globalised trading blocs like the European Union will move to protect themselves against trade negotiations with the USA going south and finding themselves shut out of critical national systems underpinned by Google and Microsoft software.

I really hope not. Not to be political but I love the choice, variety and interesting innovation that is a result of globalisation as companies are forced to compete.

I know Huawei can use open source Android but without the Play Store and Google apps it’s not really the same.

UK - there are reports that they’re disabling all non-open-source apps on Huawei phones in the UK as we speak

It affects all proprietary google apps

Currently when America sneezes the rest of the world catches it's cold. Eventually, after prolonged abuse the rest of the world will distance itself with America. Resulting in the USA being more isolated economically.

This has almost nothing in the world to do with cell phones. It has to do with sanctions, on a government that the current administration views as hostile, which are being intentionally violated by companies in China. This is a political argument, not anything to do with market-share. This isn't even a move by Google. Google is not doing anything except for following the law, because if they do not, their officers can be arrested and their company can be devastated. Now, is there a sideline thought that causing economic pain to Huawei and ZTE may cause those companies to put pressure on the Chinese government to be more sincere in their negotiations with other countries? Perhaps. But that again, would be the government motivation, not Google's. Google WANTS to have Huawei as a partner because Huawei is one of their biggest business partners in mobile.
It's got to do with business. If you don't get that nevermind.

And as far as the phones are concerned, what did OnePlus do? Huawei can do the same thing, or use (or buy) LineageOS.

If you buy a OnePlus in China, they just install GApps. Huawei can do the same thing - suggest that the user install GApps.

I don't think this is going to have significant effect on users, Huawei or China.

Unfortunately politics and business are not always mutually exclusive. Where I think the distinction lies is what is the prime driving force. I'm not ready to condemn either side just yet....still waiting to see how this plays out and hope this doesn't shatter the market.

"Google bans Huawei:Are you worried?"

No, but I do think it's very unfortunate and unfair though. If Huawei devices were truly spyware, they would have taken them apart, throughly investigate their components, and then report their findings. The fact that they have not done that, just screams fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
