I've been quite pleased with the TB since buying it on launch day. It's my first android device and the developer support has been fantastic. As we sit on the cusp of some major new launches (Bionic, Vigor, etc) my plan was to stick with HTC devices for the foreseeable future.

All that may have just changed with Google's purchase of Moto. Imagine a top tier phone maker shipping a pure Google phone (like the Nexus). Software updates come IMMEDIATELY rather than having to wait for carrier approval. Sounds delicious!

A game changer? I think so. Google has Apple in their sites. Wonder what this does to HTC long term.

I think this is a HUGE game changer. I previously didn't care for Motorolas build quality after the original Droid. However now that Google owns them and I'd assume will be making pure Google phones without Moto Blur and all that garbage. This new ownership could have huge impact on the Android community and smartphones as a whole, because now Apple should be scared.

MOTO just became the flagship Hardware of Android. HTC can't put out hardware that is super buggy like the TB, or loyal customers will most certainly flock to MOTO. Still no Gingerbread or skype video on the TB, If the Bionic is everything its cracked up to be I could be defecting very soon.

MOTO has always had good build quality to me and this should boost their software as that's what Google knows.

I think the first priority for Google is to stop the Apple lawsuits. I'm not sure any phone currently slated for release will be much different based off this news.

This is a good news for every Android company in a way. The patient portfolio is the best of the major companies not Apple, especially with the fact Moto has some of the first cell patients. This helps Android so much against their battle with MS and Apple.

I am also a fan of Moto devices. I really enjoyed my time with the DX and thing that their handsets are designed quite well.

I think that this will be good for every brand and device. It will certainly step up the quality of the builds and devices. I am excited to see Google step into the hardware front!

I'm wondering if this means preferential treatment for Motorola devices. All of a sudden, it kind of sucks to have an HTC/Samsung/other manufacturer phone and locked into a 2-year contract. I know Google said they are still open and will support other manufacturers, but making updates available for their Motorola phones before anyone elses is a huge selling point that they will gain money from. I guess we'll just have to see how this plays out, but I am a bit nervous.

You won't see a Google/Moto phone for at least another year. Probably closer to two.

I also think the Droid Bionic is too far in its development (what, its supposed to be released in September) that this won't change anything much on it. We'll have to wait until the next major Moto release for Google's ownership to really mean something.

They could very easily decide to make it a stock Android device. I'm not saying I think they will, but I definitely think it's possible.

You're probably right, but think about what that first phone will look like. The Google/Moto partnership will want to make a BIG splash. I suspect they'll release their first flagship device with all the options checked. Quad core, 1+ gig of memory, 720p or higher resolution, next gen LTE integrated radio, unlocked bootloader all running stock Android. Make no mistake, their mission will be to crush Apple and they will throw everything they've got at these new devices.

Rather than speculate what that first device will be I'm now wondering if my Thunderbolt is enough phone to get me to that first goog/moto device.

I am very happy with this news, to protect Android from attack. I hope it does not become an issue for other manufactures. I like HTC and would hate to see it affect their relationship with Google and Android platform.

Google needs the 17,000 patents. I think it will take a year or more before we see any real changes to Moto phones. I do expect them to have the ICS Nexus. Not because of this, but the prior announcement that Texas Instruments will be the SoC provider for ICS. Moto has used more TI chips for years. More so than HTC, Samsung, or LG.... It would be nice to see Moto at least unencypt bootloader. Better if they outright kill Blur.... Only time will tell. What I really want to see is Google use the patents to step in and protect Samsung and HTC from Apple/M$ attacks(neither is a lesser evil).

I don't think it's going to make as big of a change as most of you are predicting. They have went out of their way already this morning to say that Google and Motorola would continue to operate as totally independent companies. HTC and Samsung have come out with statements as well, it seems like they were in the loop on things and supportive of the move since it was done primarily for patent reasons.

The things some are suggesting here are possible, and I can understand the appeal of it, but I think Google is too smart of a company to alienate other manufacturers of their devices.

I love MOTO as a manufacturer. As long as these are pure android phones and not running that awful BLUR, then i'd take one.

Thank heavens! I mean, can you really imagine a "Moto-Googoo" smartphone? Naw.... :)

No way. They would have to go through Verizon's approval process all over again and the Bionic has already been 'delayed' way too long already and the purchase of Moto will still take some time to be approved and finalized.

Thanks, Robrecht

This was good news for all of the Android oems. HTC is still one of the top oems
