Google confirms Verizon will handle updates

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

I'll believe fast updates through Verizon when pigs fly through hell freezing over! I'm still waiting for the Marshmallow update from my original Droid Turbo... VZW has never done any updates quickly at all, if they say they are, then they are lying!

They've done it before. See first gen Moto X KitKat on Verizon. And with security, see Galaxy S7s.

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

I'm not sure which reports point to problems operating on VZW with handsets purchased from the Google Store. I bought a 5X and installed VZW SIM with no problems. I use the handset everyday.

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

I don't think the question here is problems operating the phone, the question is with functionality.

We know that vzw has prevented the ability to unlock the bootloader.

We know that there are 3 apps installed on the device, which does not sound like much - but again its bloatware.

No one trust VZW on release updates and security patches. And there is an article already out there that vzw would not "confirm" releasing updates on the same schedule as google.

The big issue for me, is will the google version of the phone be able to enable wifi calling on the vzw network. We know tmobile users can. What I can't find for certainty is the ROM is coded to allow this on vzw's network...or do you need the vzw version of the phone to utiltize this.

The other thing I was wondering if my mobile hot spot is in issue or not?

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

Regardless if this phone is updated by Verizon or Google directly it will probably follow the same update schedule. The Pixel phones "made by Google" are too important for them to have any perceived issues or lacking in an area like updates. Unlike with the Motorola update issues there is one less party to finger point at. I'm sure this was discussed during their exclusivity contract negotiations and has already been worked out to Google's satisfaction.

P.S.
It's already been reported that the Pixel will be compatable with T-Mobile and Verzion Wi-Fi calling:
Pixel and Pixel XL will support T-Mobile and Verizon WiFi calling

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

I would hope that it would get updates just as soon as Nexus devices did. If it doesn't it would kind of ruin the idea of these being successors to the Nexus, and potentially affect the decision of any customers coming from a Nexus device.

Verizon updates

Does Verizon GUARANTEE that all Android updates will be available the exact same time as the updates are made available to the unlocked versions sold directly by Google? or do you think that Verizon will delay the software updates?

Re: Verizon updates

Verizon has yet to comment either way (and probably won't).

My advice, once VZW has demo devices, see if they have even 1 of the preloaded bloatware- if it does, I'm sure there will be some delay, however small.

Re: Verizon updates

Verizon purchased devices will contain three bloat apps. My Verizon, Messages+, and one other I forgot.

I can never understand why Apple has the muscles
to force Verizon to agree to let iPhones get updates
directly from Apple, at the same times as all other
iphone... and yet Samsung and other companies
have no control over when their own phones get
updated.(except when Verizon feels like it)

Re: Verizon updates

It had been confirmed by Verizon that it will come preloaded with at least three Verizon apps: My Verizon, Go90, and VZ Messages. Do you think that immediate updates can still be available despite this small amount of bloatware?

Apple has the right to control is own updates because of there original deal with at&t. When Apple made the first iPhone they told at&t that they would make it exclusive to them as long as Apple controlled all updates and at&g agreed. Later in 2011 when the exclusivity ended Apple brought the iPhone to ask the other carriers with the same terms and by that point the iPhone was so popular that carriers couldn't say no so Apple has full control of there updates. I'm hoping that Google is trying to do the same now by making a deal with Verizon but not sure.

Re: Verizon updates

Call me crazy, but I actually use My Verizon, so that doesn't bother me all that much.

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

I would really love to get a firm answer about the update cycle, Google vs. VZW... I figure we will probably have to wait until the phones are released and see what happens to really find out

Re: Bloatware and updates on Verizons pixels?

So if you buy from "not Verizon" (as I did with my HTC); will you be stuck with the same "update schedule" considering Verizon is the only authorized US dealer? With HTC even though you bought the phone direct from them you still got stuck with the Verizon garbagio and have to wait for Verizon to do its "thing"

I think one way to tell (or at least have a clue) will be to compare software version numbers between a Verizon model and a Google Store bought model.
