Google+ contacts mysteriously no longer show up

Starting a couple days ago, I noticed that Google+ profiles no longer show up in my phone's contacts, even though I clearly have the appropriate settings ticked on and Google+ set to sync. I was wondering whether it could be an issue with my specific setup (stock MK3 firmware unrooted), an issue with the device in general, or perhaps it's something Google has decided to change system-wide (in which case this thread could be moved to a more general section). It's not a major issue as long as something doesn't start happening with the main Google contacts, but the issue is a bit perplexing.

I just checked again and the Google+ connection to my contacts is restored.
