Google engineer incompetence

I have a OnePlus 12 and one of the very first settings I turned on was 'Flip to mute incoming calls'. So, why did my flipped phone ring this morning when I received a spam call?

Unless this kind of thing is happening across a wide range of devices, it's much more likely to be an issue with OnePlus's specific build. You can always send feedback from within the system settings.

On OnePlus phones, it’s more of a gesture-based silencer, and it doesn’t always trigger in every situation.
A few common reasons it can still ring:
Phone wasn’t perfectly face-down
The feature relies on the proximity + motion sensors. If the phone was slightly tilted, on a soft surface (bed, couch), or moved by vibration, it may not register as “flipped”.
Screen was already on / phone was active
Flip to mute works most reliably when the phone is idle with the screen off. If the screen was on (notifications, AOD wake, movement), it can miss the gesture.
Spam / unknown caller handling overrides it
Some OnePlus builds treat spam calls differently, especially if:
“Ring for repeated calls” is enabled
A spam app or carrier spam filter takes over the call handling

Do Not Disturb vs Flip to Mute
Flip to mute only silences after the phone detects the flip. DND is system-level and more reliable for guaranteed silence.
OxygenOS bug or inconsistency
OxygenOS 14/15 has had reports where flip gestures work inconsistently until a reboot or after updates.

What to suggest to try:
Reboot the phone
Toggle Flip to mute OFF → restart → turn it back ON
Test on a flat, hard surface
If silence is critical, use Do Not Disturb or Silence unknown callers instead

Bottom line: it’s not you doing anything wrong the feature just isn’t 100% foolproof.
